On Driving and Envelopes

Nov 19, 2006 23:40

Ages ago, I wrote a piece that I thought I would clean up and post. In fact, I was so OCD about this that I decided that until I posted this piece, I wouldn't post any further. Well, I'm afraid that my priority list did not allow any more of a cleanup than a quick spell-check. So, without further ado, here goes.

It's a funny old world. We do the best we can. )

envelopes, driving, cars

And, as I told Becca....

I'm just glad you took the time to read the whole thing. It's more stamina than I would have.

cars, and by extension driving, scare the b-Jesus out of me. they always have, and they always will. I drive a Toyota Camry with automatic transmission(though I wish I had a manual again). I drive on the edge of my seat, and am never completely comfortable until I'm safely parked. by extension, I consider myself a fairly well-educated and conscientious driver. I prefer my driving envelope to be astronomically above my car's performance envelope (the reason I wish I had a manual transmission again like my old '90 Honda Accord).

I thought about this approach while writing the piece. I have to admit, it does sound like the saner, more sensible approach... :)

I'm just glad someone took the time to read the whole thing. Frankly, I don't think I'd have the stamina :)

I like that last bit. It rather evokes the demotivational poster, MISTAKES: "It could be that the purpose of your life is only to serve as a warning to others."

I am a bad driver. I know I am a bad driver. When ever I drive with a passenger in the car I am forced to realize how bad a driver I am (since most of my mistakes involve me not noticing things that could kill me, in takes a passenger to make me realize how bad I really am). Because I know I am a bad driver I don't enjoy driving and I strive to do it as little as possible to reduce my risk to myself and others. The main problem with this? I never get any better because I drive so rarely. So I stay a bad driver and continue to not want to drive.
