So, in the last week or so, I've had massive family drama, total physical exhaustion due to activities I participated in to make other people have fun, my period, a friend's car getting towed from in front of my house, a canceled concert, and dizzy spells sufficiently impressive that I'm taking off work today due to inability to drive ( Read more... )

...what? How can a computer do that unless completely possessed by Satan? My utmost sympathies, especially with all of the other things too.

And heating pads and painkillers sounds like a good idea especially considering today's weather.

you know the general guidelines for this, right? like basically do nothing else with the computer before attempting recovery?

anyway, that is full of suck. [hugs]

Yes, thank you - I am using thespooniest's computer, while he attempts to recover the files on mine.

So far, though, things are not looking good. Any files put on the computer later than about a week after its purchase seem to be gone.

To be more precise, this is an eee running the stock system (a derivative of Xandros). I had to install one or two things to even try to undelete anything, due to the onboard storage being soldered straight to the motherboard (otherwise I'd have taken it out of the machine and mounted it externally elsewhere just for good measure). But since then I've been grabbing every deleted inode I could find and copying it off to an external drive, which I can then safely analyze on another machine.

The problem is, just as she said, the only deleted inodes that seem to still be around all appear to be system files from about a week after the machine was purchased, plus a bunch of binary data that I'm pretty sure doesn't correspond to anything useful. Nothing else even registers.

Yikes!

For backup, I email everything extremely important to my gmail account or google docs. For some other things I use something called allway sync which seems to do a nice job of keeping a second copy laying around.

Good luck!
