Summary: Changmin saw a man giving a ring to Jaejoong from a distance. What is the meaning of this?
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything
A/N: I’m too lazy to list out all the inferred things *bricked* anyway, I know I haven’t updated this universe for a very long time, though I have to say this is my favorite universe xD
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this :D
The Ring
“Yunho?” Jaejoong called as he walked into their shared room. “May I ask you something?”
“Yes?” Yunho asked as he looked up from his psychology textbook. “What is it?”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong sat in front of a vanity table, brushing his hair with his new comb carefully. He looked at his comb after he finished doing so and sighed.
“What’s wrong?” Yunho asked as he walked over. “You’re preparing for a date?”
“No!” Jaejoong exclaimed in embarrassment. “I’m just going to meet up with my friends, really.”
“Then why the bother?” Yunho asked again.
“A lot of my hair is falling.” Jaejoong pouted. “I tried using shampoos and conditioners marked with hairfall therapy but they really don’t help. This comb is less harsh than my usual ones, but they still fall.”
Yunho looked at his comb and chuckled. “You’re doing it the wrong way. You can’t do it yourself. Here, I’ll do your hair for you.”
Jaejoong handed the comb over and let Yunho work on his hair. “Thank you.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Hey, Jae!” Changmin called from across the street when he saw Jaejoong standing in front of a tall, good-looking, young man, chatting happily with him. He had never seen the man before and he was sure he wasn’t one of Jaejoong’s friends.
He called again, but still, Jaejoong didn’t hear him. He kept on chatting with him, laughing happily occasionally, before he gave something to him. He looked at the object on his hand while beaming, then slipped it on his left ring finger.
Changmin was about to call him again when the rush of traffic obstructed his view on the two. When the traffic light went red again, the two were already nowhere in sight.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yoochun stared almost blanky as Jaejoong prepared dinner as usual. Something was different, he knew it, but he wasn’t sure what.
“Hey, did you notice his ring?” Changmin asked as he joined him by the kitchen doorsill.
“Thank goodness you said that!” Yoochun exclaimed in relief. “I was about to go insane while wondering what was different about him. Hm, what about it?”
“Do you know where he got it from?” Changmin asked again.
Yoochun lifted his eyebrow. “Isn’t it from Yunho? I saw him wearing a ring too earlier today.”
“No, that ring has been with him since earlier this week. Jae has just worn his ring today,” Changmin said.
“Come to think of it, I asked Yunho if he bought another ring for Jae but he said no. I thought he was only denying it,” Yoochun said as he rubbed his chin in thought. “But why would someone give him a ring?”
“He’s not interested in other men, I know,” Changmin said, nodding his head in agreement. “But I saw a tall, good-looking man giving the ring to him.”
“Eh, really?” Yoochun asked in surprise. “Who is he?”
“That, I don’t know as well.” Changmin shook his head dejectedly. “I was walking to the grocery store to do the weekly shopping when I saw them across the street. I lost sight of them because of the traffic and suddenly they were nowhere to be seen.”
“This is strange.” Yoochun frowned deeper. “I don’t remember him knowing any men beside us and his relatives, let alone someone who would propose to him. Plus, he told Yunho he was going to meet up with his friends. He wouldn’t lie, not to him at least.”
“We’ll just have to ask him about it later then.”
“Okay.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Junsu stared at Jaejoong while he ate and wondered what was different. He knew something was off, but he couldn’t really tell what.
“Are you staring at his ring?” Yoochun asked when he saw Junsu staring off and not eating.
“Oh, so that’s it!” Junsu exclaimed suddenly, nearly surprising everyone at the table, except Yunho who was still eating calmly.
“What is it?” Jaejoong asked in curiosity.
“Come here.” Junsu motioned at Jaejoong to come closer, and grabbed his hand. He inspected the white gold ring closely, and noticed that there was a small diamond at the top. “Where did you get this ring? Who gave it to you?”
“This? No one gave it to me,” Jaejoong said as he stared at his ring.
“Aw, don’t lie to me. Come on, tell me,” Junsu urged.
“No, seriously, no one gave it to me.” Jaejoong shook his head.
“Not your boyfriend?”
“I don’t have a boyfriend.”
“Huh?” Junsu looked at him strangely. “Then why were you always out everyday until late, leaving us with frozen dinner?”
“Oh, that. I was out to see my editor. We were talking about the details of my newest book.” Jaejoong laughed as he explained.
“So... where did you get this ring from?” Junsu asked, still not satisfied yet.
“I bought this,” Jaejoong said simply. “I have always wanted to buy this kind of ring. It’s kind of cute, don’t you think? My mother has one, and I want one too.”
“And...?”
“And Yunho said he saw a store that sold cheap white gold rings. I contacted the owner, and he turned out to be a distant relative of mine, so he gave me further discounted price,” Jaejoong said. “This one doesn’t even cost a tenth of the usual price.”
“But why do you wear it on your ring finger?” Yoochun interrupted, finally able to ask what had been bothering him.
“This is the only one left, and it only fits my ring finger, that’s why.”
“I see.”
“Hey, why do you guys sound so disappointed? Do you want me to get engaged that fast?” Jaejoong complained. “Anyway, finish up your dinner soon. Yunho has an assignment he has to finish so it’s better for him to finish washing the dishes soon.”
“Okay.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong took his ring off and put it on his bedside table, staring at it for a while. He smiled to himself, and turned the lamp off, snuggling under the covers.
“You look disappointed.”
Darn Yunho for being a psychologist wannabe.
“Was it not what you wanted?” he asked again.
“Hm...” Jaejoong mumbled. “Well, it looks close enough, and I suppose I shouldn’t complain since this one is so cheap.”
“Which one did you want?”
“I wanted the one with two cut diamonds stacked together. That is the one my mother has. However, my cousin said he sold it to someone already.”
“I see. Well, you should wish for it. Who knows if Lady Fortune is on your side.”
“Nah, I don’t mind. You shouldn’t worry about it too much.”
“Go to sleep.”
“Okay. Good night, Yunho.”
Yunho waited until the rustlings stopped from Jaejoong’s side, which meant he was asleep already. He smiled, and turned around slightly to find a more comfortable position.
“Lady Fortune will be on your side.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Jae? You look troubled,” Yoochun said as he walked over to Jaejoong who was fidgeting in front of his bedroom door.
“Oh, Yoochun.” Jaejoong sighed. “Do you know whose ring this is? I put my ring on my desk while I was cleaning the bathroom and when I came back, my ring is gone, and this is placed in its stead.”
Yoochun looked at the ring. It was a small ring with two diamonds on top, stacked together and linked by a thin white gold band. It looked almost like Jaejoong’s, the only difference being the number of cut diamonds.
“I think it’s Yunho’s,” Yoochun said as he tried to remember. “Didn’t you notice he has been wearing a ring for a week now?”
“No. Oh, so this is his?” Jaejoong sighed as he looked at the ring. “I’ll go find him,” he said and went off to find Yunho in the living room.
“What happened?” Junsu asked as he walked over to Yoochun who was still watching the two.
“Those two are going to get engaged.”
“Huh?”
“You’ll see later.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Yunho?” Jaejoong called as he walked into the living room and saw Yunho sitting on the couch, back slumping as he slouched over in front of his laptop.
“Yes? What’s the matter?”
“I want to return your ring.”
“It’s not mine.”
“Eh? But Yoochun said-“
“It’s yours now.”
“What? But...”
“I took yours as compensation. You don’t have to feel bad.”
“But still. I will pay the difference,” Jaejoong insisted as he held onto the ring in his hand. “If you don’t want, I’m returning the ring.”
Yunho sighed, and turned to look at Jaejoong. “Come here.”
Jaejoong obeyed and sat beside him. Yunho placed his hand on Jaejoong’s, and said, “Try to take the ring off my finger.”
Jaejoong looked at his ring that was slipped onto Yunho’s ring finger. He tugged at it but it wouldn’t budge, and he knew he couldn’t take it off without hurting Yunho’s finger.
“What did you do?” Jaejoong asked with a frown. “Did you force it in?”
“No, I used oil as lubricant to slide it in, and wash it with water to remove the sticky feeling,” Yunho said nonchalantly, looking back at his laptop. “Just take the ring.”
“But this one is more expensive. I’ll feel bad if I take it.”
“Okay.” Yunho nodded. “I have a favor to ask you. You may not say no. Will that help ease your conscience?”
Jaejoong’s face lit up at that. “Yes! Do tell me what you want me to do.”
“Take the ring and stop feeling bad.”
“Eh, no way-“
Yunho placed his hand on Jaejoong’s mouth, effectively shutting him up. “Ah, you agreed already. Won’t want to make others think you’re someone who breaks your own words, no?”
“But that’s unfair. You’re cheating.” Jaejoong pouted.
“Say what you will. I told you Lady Fortune will be on your side.”
Jaejoong fell silent and watched Yunho work on his assignment. He sighed deeply and smiled. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Junsu was munching on the chocolate fudge Jaejoong bought for him on the way home while staring at Jaejoong and Yunho. This time, there was something strange about them.
“The ring, the ring,” Changmin said as he passed him and Junsu’s eyes widened in realization.
Jaejoong had been acting strange because he was trying to keep the ring from falling off, since it was too big for his ring finger.
“They’re so cute,” Junsu commented as he walked off to his room.
