Chapter One - Trouble Starts

Footsteps were heard padding down the wooden hallway of a building that looked like it belonged to the ancient Japanese era.  A young boy dressed in all black stopped in front of a sliding paper door, and kneeled down before he slid the door open with both hands, and bowed.

“I am here, Captain Eeteuk,” the man announced as he kept bowing his head low, his hands situated in front of his head to balance himself so that he didn’t fall down.

“Ah, hello there Jae,” Eeteuk greeted as he turned around, and looked at the young boy.  “Stand up, stand up.  Don’t forget, you’re the vice-captain here.”

Jaejoong sighed, and got up, walking into the room, and closing the door behind him.  “What is it that you want to ask me?” he asked, looking back at Eeteuk who was drinking tea while sitting in front of the altar that was present in all divisions’ headquarter.

“You’re still as rushed as usual,” Eeteuk commented as he set his clay cup down, and looked at Jaejoong.  “There seems to be a breach somewhere in Korea.  I want you to investigate and take care of it, then return here.  Oh, don’t forget to come back in forty-eight hours.”

“I see.  I will go now, then,” Jaejoong nodded, and got up from his sitting position, sliding the paper door open.

“Oh, and if you meet your brother, say hello for me,” Eeteuk waved cheerfully, and Jaejoong silently closed the door behind him, looking at the wooden floor below him solemnly.

“My brother…” he mumbled to himself, but quickly shook his head, and dashed to the portal that connected the Soul Society, where they stayed, and the Human World.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“See you tomorrow!”

Goodbyes and greetings were heard all over the school grounds as the students filed out of their school building, eager to get home, or somewhere they wanted to go that day.

“Hey Yunho!” a young boy called as he rushed towards a taller boy, followed quickly by another boy.  “Do you want to come with us to the arcade today?”

“Ah,” Yunho looked at his two friends.  “Sorry, but not today.  I still haven’t finished the assignments due tomorrow,” Yunho grinned apologetically at them.  “I’ll see you tomorrow Su, Chun.”

“Oh, okay,” Junsu agreed.  “See you tomorrow.  And don’t forget to finish everything today, or you’ll get a detention,” Junsu giggled, and waved at him.

Yunho waved back, and walked down the path that led to his small apartment.  Ever since his parents’ deaths, he had been staying by himself there.

He stopped in his tracks when he felt something staring at him from a distance, and suddenly black creatures emerged from the walls, and the path, surrounding him.

“These monsters,” Yunho frowned as he took a defensive stance.  “They were the same ones like that time,” he thought to himself as he looked around in panic.  There were too many of them.

One of the monsters started attacking, and Yunho could only evade it, trying not to get hit.  He tried to deliver a blow back at the monster, but it missed, as if it was only an illusion.

“What the--?” his eyes widened in surprise as he stumbled forward because of the impact, but when the monster pulled back and hit him in the gut, the pain was real.  “Damn!  How can I fight them if I can’t touch them!?”

“Stand back!” a voice shouted, and when Yunho looked up, he saw someone around his age dressed in all black, and was holding onto a sword.  He moved back when the person jumped in front of him.

The sword was glowing, and he was awed.  He’d never seen a real sword this close, and to see a glowing one was never in his agenda.  He could only watch as the young boy-yes, he had noticed that it was male despite his feminine looks-slash the monsters down one by one.

“Move back,” the boy said as he turned to look at Yunho, and continued killing the monsters one by one.  They groaned in pain before they disappeared after being struck.  “This is starting to get annoying,” he added when more and more monsters came.

“Shirayuki, sankai!” he shouted, and thunder shot out from the sword, striking down the monsters that came at them.  He sighed as he looked around, and was about to sheath his sword when his eyes caught something.

“Watch out!” Jaejoong shouted, and quickly pushed Yunho to the side, sending him falling back to the ground.  He was about to protest, when suddenly he saw a monster attacking Jaejoong.

“Stand back!” Jaejoong shouted as he jumped to Yunho’s side, and Yunho watched in awe as the wound caused by the monster closed so quickly.  “It still hurts, stupid.  Now, can you fight?”

“Huh?” Yunho asked back stupidly.

“Can you fight!?” Jaejoong asked, a hint of urgency and panic lacing his tone.

“Oh, yes, yes I can,” Yunho nodded quickly, not wanting to anger him anymore.  “But I can’t touch them.”

“I didn’t ask that,” Jaejoong glowered, and pushed Yunho back to evade the monster’s attack.  “Looks like this is the last one.  I can’t move my right arm freely, so I’ll lend you some of my powers so you can fight them.”

“How?”

“Don’t interrupt me!”

“Okay.”

“Hold my sword,” Jaejoong said as he lifted his sword with his left hand, and pointed the blade at Yunho.  “Hold it.”

Yunho reached out slowly, and held the blade.  It suddenly glowed so bright it was almost blinding, and he felt a hot rush of energy flow from the sword into him through his hand.

“Wah!  I told you to take some, not all!” Jaejoong panicked as he tried to pull away the sword from Yunho’s grip, but it wouldn’t budge.  “Stop it!”

His protests were to no avail, as the sword suddenly dematerialized, and went inside Yunho’s body.  He was enveloped in a bright light for a short moment, before the light vanished, and he was already clad in black clothes, the same one with the one Jaejoong was wearing, and a huge blade was resting on his back.

Jaejoong’s eyes widened as he fell down, sitting helplessly as he watched Yunho fight the last monster with his newly-gained power, and wondered what had just happened.

The monster was down in no time, and Yunho rushed back to him.  “Hey, you okay?”

“Ah?  Yes, it’ll be fine soon,” Jaejoong got up and dusted himself.  “I better return now, before news of this spread,” he mumbled to himself, and held his hand out.

“What are you doing?” Yunho asked him strangely as he looked at Jaejoong and lifted an eyebrow.

“What-what the…” Jaejoong trailed off as horror was written all over his face.  “I can’t materialize my sword.”

“Oh,” Yunho blinked.  “And?  What’s wrong with that?”

“That means I can’t return, idiot!  The gate is opened with the sword!” Jaejoong shouted at him, glaring hotly.

“And what’s wrong with that?  Where are you going anyway?” Yunho shook his head.

“I’m going to return to Soul Society,” Jaejoong huffed.  “I’m a Shinigami, and I can’t stay in the human world for more than forty-eight hours.  I’ve been here for forty hours.”

“What would happen then?” Yunho asked again.

“I’d die,” Jaejoong sighed.  “Tell me, do you know Kim Kibum?”

“The owner of a goods store?  Yes, I’ve seen him once,” Yunho nodded.  “What about him?”

“Take me there,” Jaejoong demanded.  “You caused this trouble to happen in the first place.  Now you have to take responsibility.”

“Oi, don’t talk as if I raped you or something,” Yunho protested, but was quickly silenced by Jaejoong’s glare.  “Okay, okay, I’ll take you there.

“I’ll explain everything there,” Jaejoong  stated, and Yunho nodded in agreement.

They stared at each other.

“What?  You expect me to carry you there or something?” Yunho asked.

“Wait,” Jaejoong sighed.  He patted Yunho’s shoulder twice, and he was back in his school uniform.  He patted his own shoulder twice, and he was dressed in a white t-shirt and black trousers.

“Is that a Shinigami skill, or did you learn magic?” Yunho asked in awe.

“Shut up,” Jaejoong glared at him.  “I told you I’ll explain things later.  Now, let’s go.”

They had barely taken three steps, when Jaejoong suddenly collapsed.

“Oi!  Oi!  Wake up!”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“How is he?” Yunho asked when Kibum walked out of the room where Jaejoong was.

“He’s fine,” Kibum nodded approvingly at him.  “Thank you for taking him here.  He’d die otherwise.”

“Oh, he mentioned it to me earlier, and asked me to take him here,” Yunho admitted.  “What’s wrong?”

“A Shinigami can’t stay in the human world for long, unless they have a temporary body,” Kibum explained.  “I am a Shinigami myself, and I invented the temporary body, that’s why I can stay here.”

“You gave him one then?” Yunho asked again.

“Yes, I did.  He still has fever, but he’ll be okay soon.  Shinigamis recover fast,” Kibum confirmed.  “Meanwhile, do you want something to eat?”

Yunho nearly sweat-dropped at the change of topic.  “Uh… well… it’s appreciated.  I’ll take anything you offer.”

“Okay then,” Kibum walked into the kitchen.  He closed the door behind him, and sighed, leaning his back on the door.  “I’m sorry Jaejoong-ah.  But there’s no one else I can trust it to.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Kibum?” Jaejoong called as he walked out of the room he was in before.  “Thanks for the temporary body,” he smiled weakly.  “I can’t materialize my sword.”

“Huh?  What happened?” Kibum asked in surprise.

“Hasn’t he told you?” Jaejoong asked back, pointing at Yunho.

“No, he hasn’t,” Kibum shook his head.  “What happened?” he frowned.

“Well…” Jaejoong trailed off.  “I was taking care of the breach Captain Eeteuk told me about earlier, when I saw him.  I tried giving him some of my powers, but he sucked in all of my powers, and turned into a Shinigami himself.”

Kibum looked at him blankly.

“Yes, I know it sounds fucked up, but that’s true,” Jaejoong sighed.  “Now I can’t materialize my sword so I can’t return.  And what’s worse, although he took in all of my powers, he only showed a sixth of it!”

“Hey!” Yunho protested.

Kibum raised his hand, and the two of them fell silent.  “So… he’s a rare case,” he mumbled as he turned to study Yunho.  “He has the potential to become a Shinigami even before he died.”

“I kinda figured it,” Jaejoong frowned.  “But-“

“You didn’t let me finish,” Kibum cut in.  “A half of your power was actually used to unleash his Shinigami form.  The one-third merged with his own power, and still needs to be unlocked by himself.”

“Then what about me?” Jaejoong frowned.  “I can’t stay here forever!  If news about this spread, then… my brother will…”

“Jae,” Kibum reprimanded.  “Don’t think about it.”

“But it’s true!” Jaejoong protested.  “I-I don’t know if he’ll spare me.  I need to get my power back soon.”

Kibum placed a hand on Jaejoong’s shoulder.  “Then stay here, and I will make sure he doesn’t find you.”

Jaejoong smiled bitterly at him.  “I need to look after him,” he motioned at Yunho.  “Hollows are bound to attack him now that he can fight them.  Even before he could they already did.”

“They did?” Kibum looked surprised again.  “He really is a rare case.”

“Yes,” Jaejoong nodded.  “So, why don’t you explain things to him?” he requested.

“Okay,” Kibum agreed, and turned to face Yunho.  “So, what do you want to know?”

“Hm,” Yunho mumbled.  “What is a Shinigami?  Then, what is the Soul Society?  What is a Hollow?”

“Okay, one at a time,” Kibum nodded.  “A Shinigami is a death god.  They are dressed in all-black, usually, and they each have a sword, although the abilities of their swords depend on themselves.  They are divided into thirteen divisions, each with their own specialty.  Jaejoong’s division focuses on taking care of breaches, while his brother’s division focuses on short-ranged battles with swords,” he explained.  “Oh, by the way, Jaejoong is the vice-captain of the Thirteenth Division, and his brother is the captain of the Sixth Division.”

“Wow,” Yunho mumbled.

“Yes, wow, now let me continue,” Kibum said.  “The Soul Society, is a place where Shinigamis live.  It only has one season, so it’s spring all year.  There are headquarters of the divisions, the board room for the Council-a group of people who decided on things in the Soul Society-and also a prison where they keep Hollows, and where the Hollows Shinigami killed will end up at.”

“And lastly, Hollows are monsters that you saw earlier.  They are the embodiment of spirits who had regrets or grudges before they died, and returned to the world,” Kibum finished.  “That is all.  Anything else?”

“What are you two worrying about?” Yunho asked, and the two fell silent.

“Let me,” Jaejoong interjected.  “Giving powers to humans is something Shinigamis must not do at all cost.  However, if it was temporary, it could be overlooked.  I, however, gave all my powers-although it was more like stolen from me-to you, a human.  No matter what, it’s a crime.”

“I still don’t know whether they will consider the fact that he’s a Shinigami potential or not,” Kibum admitted.

“But let’s face the worst case scenario first,” Jaejoong sighed.  “The punishment would be…”

“Yes?” Yunho raised an eyebrow.

“Death sentence,” Kibum filled in helpfully.

“What!?” Yunho nearly shrieked.  “For that!?  A death sentence!?”

“Well, yeah…” Jaejoong shrugged.  “It’s not like I haven’t died, really.”

“But-“

“For now, let’s not worry about it,” Kibum shook his head.  “You can sense it when your brother and your friend are near right?” he asked Jaejoong.

“Ah?  Oh, yes,” Jaejoong nodded.

“His friend?” Yunho asked again.

“Yes, his childhood friend,” Kibum shrugged.  “He’s the vice-captain of the Sixth Division.”

“Oh,” Yunho mumbled.

“For now, the two of you will work together to fight Hollows,” Kibum announced.  “You have to take care of Jaejoong since he lost his power now.”

“Then, he’ll have to enroll in my school?” Yunho asked.

“I guess,” Kibum nodded.  “I’ll go take care of it.”

“Thank you,” Jaejoong bowed at him.

“Ah, no need for formalities with me,” KIibum waved it off.  “Here, this is a device to detect the presence of Hollows,” he said as he handed it over to Yunho.  “Jaejoong can still sense them, so you’ll be the one needing this.”

“Thank you,” Yunho accepted it.  It was small, and black in color.  It looked like a block of wood, but it had a screen in the middle that could blink whenever a Hollow was near.

“For now, Jaejoong will stay with you,” Kibum decided.  “Any objection?”

“I object!” Jaejoong said as he raised his hand.  “I did say I will look after him, but that doesn’t mean I want to stay with him!”

“Oh?  Then what do you suggest?” Kibum raised an eyebrow.  “I’m not exactly rich, you know.”

Jaejoong pouted.

“It’s settled then,” Kibum said happily.  “You two will stay together until I find something about Jaejoong’s lost power.  For now, you two have to look after each other, especially if they’ve arrived.”

“Understood,” Jaejoong nodded, though he was still pouting.

They fell silent for a while, before Jaejoong spoke up.  “By the way, I don’t know your name yet.”

“Same here,” Yunho shrugged.  “My name is Jung Yunho.”

“Jung Yunho,” Jaejoong nodded.  “Right, I’ll be sure to remember that.  My name is Lee Jaejoong.”

“Oh,” Yunho mumbled.  “Okay.”

“Well, you two better go back now,” Kibum stood up.  “It’s getting late,” he added.

The two nodded, and exited the store, walking back to Yunho’s apartment.
