Grad schools--the full report

The last grad school letter is in---Maryland hasn't got room for me either. I'm not surprised, really, they got over 650 people this year and things are tight everywhere. My other set also turned me down, not a tremendous surprise with my record, so no PhDs for Seibers this year ( Read more... )

*sympathy* The only thing more depressing and mysterious than grad school acceptances are...teaching position acceptances. I went to a kick ass undergrad, had a 3.85 GPA overall, wrote an honors thesis, etc....and could NOT find a grad school that wanted me. I was like...what the hell more are they looking for?!?!

Thankfully, you know what? You only need one. One grad school, one job, you know? So when my final one rolled in, UNC, and it was an acceptance, while I was worried (a die hard Yankee! in Da Souf!!), it turned out to be the best thing I could have done.

I hope this school in Chicago is a great fit for you!

Oooh, UNC? I graduated from Asheville, it was awesome and full of hippies.

You make me feel a bit better, I only had a 3.5 (on my record, that is--they got the one from last year and in my final semester I kicked it up to all-As, got a 3.6 and hit cum laude) and UNCA isn't that well known. What subject were you into?

I did my grad at Chapel Hill which was awesome. Chapel Hill was, as they say, aiiight, (big sports school, lots o' jocks), but we were so close to RTP to be full of awesome stuff. (Do they have Goodberry's down by you? God I miss them.)

I was English all the way. I suspect my problem was I'd specialized too early--took every medieval course they offered, but, for example, managed to dodge the horror that is 18th C Brit Lit until *wham* grad school.

Or, maybe I just suck. ^___^

Let us know what you think after the visit!

No Goodberry's, sadly. Lots of little arty shops. My only sight of Chapel Hill was the time I went to visit it while touring colleges in North Carolina, and then we just drove through it because I was really wanting to go home because the previous night we stayed in a cheap hotel and two drunk guys were either fighting, attempting sex, or both right over our room.

My mom did English, I believe. I took psych, we didn't have much room to specialize there.

Oh, and there will be hosts of pictures, as always.

Sorry, dude. I hate that whole process. One year, my friend and I were applying. We both applied to the same ten schools and both got rejected from all of them. He had a little extra cash, though, so he applied to two more that I didn't and got accepted to both. Asshole. heh

That does suck. Don't they know you're made of awesome?

Whoo! Looks like we're all going to Illinois :P You me and possibly Gary, that is, he still hasn't gotten two of the results yet.

I know it's about 2.5 hours by car, so yep ^_^ We've got a train station in town too, so easy access.

congrats!

sounds like your search has been as depressing as my hunt for a job closer to TN! Maybe it's a good omen.

I actually do have a job now, as it happens. Just a part-time deli job at a certain blue grocery store, but it's decent hours and a little more money in my pocket than I'd have otherwise.

Yay! Pocket money is good!

Mind you, I am very thankful to have a job -- but still .....

And it leaves me open to do my volunteering and cooking and brother caretaking that my parents really need right now, since I seem to be obligated to the midday hours.
