Once again not to prove anything, but just to get us some examples to discuss - how many non-White characters can we name in British SF or fantasy TV shows other than Doctor Who?

Lemme kick off the list with Elizabeth and Hsui Tai from The Tomorrow People; and Dayna, her dad Hal Mellanby, and Ginka (Children of Auron), IIRC the only non-White ( Read more... )

Does the Cat in Red Dwarf count?

Then there's Lister.

One of the Supervisors in "The Prisoner", IIRC played by Kenneth Benda. (Has a line about how "In Haiti, we would say he's stolen his soul". No comment.) A couple of Asian actors in small roles as well, including Barbara Yu Ling as the taxi driver who sets up the multinational nature of the Village in "Arrival".

One of the warlords from the next-to-last episode of B7 is black.

Space: 1999 had assorted non-white regulars or semi-regulars -- David Kano the computer guy, Bob Mathias the secondary doctor, Sandra Benes (Zienia Merton) and her replacement played by Alibe Parsons (AKA Matrona Kani from Mindwarp, showing she could give a decent performance).

The American dude from "Star Cops", and the Asian woman who turns up in the latter episodes. You can't say much for the depth of its portrayal of various races, but at least they had them...

Dave Lister and Cat.

Does The Avengers count as SF or fantasy? Because I know that both coloured and Asian people turned up from time to time.

Continuing the TP list, there was also Kenny (one of the first TPs).

In the show Into the Labyrinth, there was Phil (I think that was his name).

The Witches and the Grinnygog had Mr Alabaster.

In the new Tomorrow People series, Lisa and Ami.
