Remember the movie Twins? This books feels like someone took the same process to a normal Stephenson book, trying to get a book that had all the excitement and none of the infodump. But instead of Schwarzenegger, we got DeVito.

I enjoyed the first two-thirds of this book enormously, and yet agree with your every criticism of its politics. (Stephenson at least reinforces the dodgy genetics by talking about how it was reinforced by the new cultures that developed.)

Isn't the prez mentally ill as well - she has depression?

I got about 50 pages into it before setting it aside. I spent a few days reading short stories while I tried to decide if I should give it another 50 pages to see if it became sufficiently less stupid to become tolerable, and eventually concluded that I was not that interested. (Did you know that if the moon broke up into a bunch of chunks, it would take a week before any astronomers thought to model the dynamics of the system? Because why would they bother.)
