I didn't think Julia was modeled on Hillary Clinton, because Clinton has never struck me as the sort of person who would abandon her loved ones to save her own skin.

Also, if you need a book that's hard science fiction and about as far from Stephenson as one can get, try Carolyn Ives Gilman's Dark Orbit. I just finished it, and it's excellent. It has actual realistic female characters! And information dispensed in one-paragraph niblets!
