OK. I had a lot of stuff to do over the weekend (stupid Christmas), so I could only read it in dribs and drabs, but last night I pushed through and finished it.

I can't even begin to express how much I loved it. The ending in particular, mainly because I was half expecting there to be some sort of big declaration, but then there wasn't, and while on the one hand that was incredibly frustrating, in the other it was so true to the characters it took my breath away. Throughout the whole thing their actions have spoken louder than their words, and that was carried through until the end ( ... )

Oops, forgive my delay in responding to this. Any evidence in particular change your mind? :-)

Quote from you in an earlier comment:

I think by book three there are signs that Simon cares for Jeremy a lot more than he's willing to admit, way down under all the layers of denial. I always seem to get stuck on Book Three, where I think Simon's awful to Jeremy. Admittedly he's grumpy because he's been wounded, and he's a terrible patient. But he even tries Jeremy's (who up until then seems to have an endless capacity to put up with Simon) patience a couple of times. And of course the "rape" scene threw me for a loop ( ... )

Oh, Simon is a total dick in book three, between his horrible patient routine and (worse, in my opinion) his setting up Jeremy to be captured by Farraday (or at least not taking many precautions against that possibility). I think I struggled with the Farraday thing more than anything else. It seemed so cold. But I think we've discussed this before, so I won't rehash. :-P

A few good moments from With a Bullet that I thought of, where Simon's feelings seem to leak through: Simon asking Jeremy near the end of the shooting lesson (which in itself could be a moment! meep!) how long he's going to stick around; his admitting to Farraday that Jeremy is "maybe" his boyfriend; and then pretty much everything after Jeremy shoots Farraday, from gently coaxing him out of that vacant stare to cuddling him in bed (they were totally cuddling!).

Hahaha!
I LOVE those moments you mention! I just related the shooting lesson to my mom, who enjoys hearing about Simon and Jeremy more than my prattle about Dan Radcliffe.

Hee! Has your mom read the books?

Nope she hasn't read them, but I shouted out things and explained things as I read them. Hahaha! So she feels like she knows Simon and Jeremy. Their story is addictive, you have to admit.

Hee, maybe she will read them someday, if she has a few spare days/weeks to get sucked into the storyline. :-D

I doubt it. You see when I was reading bits and pieces out loud, I sort of glossed over the bits that would make her uncomfortable. I mean she's fully aware of the affection and "contact" Simon and Jeremy had, but I didn't give her the "details." Heck, she's my mom!

YOU! HI! :D haha, i couldn't remember who on the flist first pointed me to these, but i now suspect it was you. if i'm correct, THANKS! &hearts &hearts you win at life.

i've reread the whole series like three times, and each time i've been astounded at how cohesive the whole thing is. all the characters are so recognizably themselves from the moment they're introduced, and they just stay that way the whole time- even Rich, whose mole status was shocking-but-not-exactly-shocking, if you know what i mean. there are just so many things i love about these books, and that's definitely one of the biggest ones for me.

I totally agree re: how consistent the characters are. What I like is that they all have their own very distinct voices -- usually you don't even need dialogue tags like "Mike said" or "Jeremy said" because you can recognize the person by what he or she says. The author's dialogue skills are to die for. :-)

oh, yes! and given the size of the cast members, it's particularly impressive- especially with Ethan and Jeremy, who have similar mannerisms to start with! (speaking of Ethan, i'm not the only one who loves how evil he is, right? traveling-agent-from-hell! Viagra plane! "I could strand you in Romania!" &hearts &hearts &hearts)

OMG, I adore Ethan. And I have an unnatural amount of love for this exchange:

"Thanks," he said. "For, uh, for everything. Really. I know I'm kind of bad about saying so, but I really appreciate what you're doing for me."

For the barest second, Ethan's face softened into something like a real smile; then he caught himself and shifted back into the vaguely exasperated expression he usually wore. "Oh, goodness," he said. "Now I am going to feel badly about stranding you. Not badly enough to do anything about it, of course."

"Yeah, yeah," Simon said. "I'll send you a postcard from Romania. It'll just say HELP."

Hee.

I would love to read about Simon and Ethan meeting up in the future at some point. Maybe at the family New Year's party or something, LOL.

THAT IS POSSIBLY THE MOST WINNING OUT OF ALL OF ETHAN'S SCENES OF WIN!

and yes, either meeting up in the future, or harassment via answering service/postcards... because that would be so Simon.

I have this ridiculous fantasy that Ethan and Jeremy invite Simon to their Christmas party one year (like in the short story called, I think, "Happy/Merry") but they can't telling any of the other guests that Simon's FBI, although they're also the best criminals so they figure out that Simon is *some* type of law enforcement, of course. So it's Simon glaring daggers at everyone in the room, everyone glaring back, and Ethan and Jeremy completely unconcerned. And then later hot sex.

aaaah.
