Aww, bb. Sorry that it wasn't what you'd hoped. For part of that, I imagine it was 4 years of anticipation leading up to... meh.
I agree with you about the lack of Bones/Jim. Just about the only scene that made me sniffle was when he was looking down at Jim in the body bag.
But then I was distracted by Uhura being in the medbay and helping Carol walk to wherever they were examining her. And the mutant tribble. I mean, seriously, that was the biggest goddamn Tribble I had ever seen- even pre Khan blood cocktail!
While I am cheerfully a multi-ship slut for pairings, yes I think the Kirk/Spock fodder was pretty darn sweet. Even if I'm afraid half of the fandom is looking at Carol Marcus' uterus like a ticking time bomb....
I'd say I'm one step up from meh. I mostly liked it, just with a few ... quibbles. And fortunately or unfortunately, I've fallen out of this fandom a bit, so I wasn't anticipating the movie as hotly as I would have been a year or two ago. :-/
thistlerose pointed out Jim's clear relief after Bones didn't get blown up by the torpedo as another good K/Mc moment, so I'll be desperately clinging to that and the one you pointed out.
LOL, that was a huge tribble, wasn't it!
I am a multi-shipper myself, but one of the few pairings I don't read is K/S, alas. I am more about Kirk, McCoy and Pike in all their permutations. Which at this point...well. Maybe there can be some nice hurt/comfort post-Pike's death? :-D?
Well, after we got to see Carol in her underwear, we may as well look at her uterus too, LOL.
Yeah, you know I only noticed after I posted my own review that I hadn't mentioned Bones at all. He just completely slipped my mind, which makes me kinda sad.
And the Carol Marcus underwear scene ... yeah. Completely pointless. It's like they're not even trying to come up with halfway decent reasons for that kinda thing anymore. We're just supposed to accept that it needs to be there, but why? How would a movie like this be any less successful without that two seconds of her in her underwear? Does anybody actually go to a Star Trek movie in the hopes of seeing boobs?
Exactly! He was totally forgettable in the movie. :-(

THIS. I think it's just J.J. Abrams indulging his dick inner teenage boy. Pisses me off.
While I did end up loving the film at the end, it wasn't AS brilliant as XI. I actually was in a mostly WTH is this? Stage for the first quarter to third of the movie anyway. It seemed dumb, implausible, and over the top. (And when I am the one calling shenanigans on a complicated spaceship chase sequence, you know it's bad. You know I'm obsessed. BTW Sulu could have done that, Han Solo, Starbuck, a SERIOUSLY trained and skilled pilot. Kirk? Seriously? Just no. I'm not saying he couldn't man the helm on the Enterprise and do a very decent job but even he's good at everything Kirk can't do THATwithout putting in insane hours of practice

Yep. I try not to question these sorts of plots because that way lies madness, but if I'm rolling my eyes in the theater, well...not good. (Also: Spock yelling "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!" Major eye-roller for me. I get that it was a shout-out to TOS and such, but it just did not work for me for that character in that moment. But then I kind of hate revenge plots in general. Meh.)
I enjoyed how they developed Kirk and Spock's friendship, though I don't ship them AOS at all. (TOS a bit) and I actually enjoyed Spock/Uhura more this time around.
Yes, agreed! I thought Uhura was really solid, and I actually liked Quinto's Spock more this time around than I did in the first one. Their argument worked fine for me because, as you said, it's not like the movie was actually going to go into their bedroom and show us that.
Sad at lack of Chekov too but I loved his save at the end.Yeah. I think I actually whispered to SO in the theater that it was about time he got a chance to do something other

I just wish the Kirk/Bones folks could be just as happy. OR the Bones/anybody folks, for that matter.
Right! I mean, in some ways I think Uhura is getting some of the screen time that Bones would've gotten in TOS, which I can't really object to because Uhura is awesome and obviously women representation yay, but couldn't we have a foursome? Or at least give Bones SOMETHING to do other than snark? :-/
I liked how he believed in Jim but wasn't afraid to reign in Jim's 'Captain Awesome' act and tell him what's what. He was a great guy. He shouldn't have gone out like that. :(
As soon as he showed that support for Jim, he was doomed. LOL.
LOL, Bones. I guess it's a southern thing. I call all my actors 'Sweetheart' and 'Love' etc. But, they're my babies so I feel like I'm allowed. ;D
I think it is a Southern thing -- but the dynamic of a man saying "sweetheart" to a younger woman in a work situation is a lot different than your dynamic, I would think. And his tone came off as condescending to me. Bad Bones, no biscuit. :-(
