It had not been a hard night, which made things worse. When Thomas had hard nights, full of hungers and nightmares, of the memory of indescribable pain and satisfaction, he fed. Even here in this strange Chicago, he'd fed. It had done little for his Hunger, but it reminded him of what he was. Vampire. Predator ( ... )

Skysong heard the vehicle approaching and watched it warily. She wasn't sure what it was, precisely, until it opened and a man emerged from it. The dragon wondered how it worked. Land transport at home involved quite literal horsepower. Perhaps it involved a combination of magic and mechanics.

Pondering the nature of Thomas's Hummer, however, took slightly lower priority after noticing of the sword in his hand. She backed up a little bit, into the shadow of the Bean. Kitten was intelligent and resourceful, but not physically or magically capable of facing a man with a weapon intent on harming her, not alone. There weren't any particularly good hiding places or escape routes either.

She watched him closely to see what his intentions seemed to be.

The falcata held loosely at his side, Thomas approached the animal with slow, deliberate steps, careful not to make any sudden movements. The last thing he wanted was to end up accidentally gouged by some skittish cat. Mister had taught him that lesson.

As Thomas approached, he got a better look at the thing that had caught his attention. It was small, certainly smaller than Mouse, but sinuous, with a faintly reptilian look to it. It was hard to tell what colour it was, in the shadow cast by the Bean, but its skin looked faintly reptilian, scaly. Great. Was the city going to be overrun by Komodo dragons now?

Pushing that particular thought aside, Thomas continued his slow progress towards the creature. He stopped right at the edge of the Bean's shadow, staying in the light, and held up his right hand, opened and empty. "Hello?" he called, feeling mildly ridiculous.

Cautiously, Kitten took a few paces forward. He seemed friendly, and wasn't brandishing the weapon. She chirped a few syllables in response to his greeting, their tone friendly but equally hesitant.

The dragon was rarely on her own, and therefore hadn't had to meet many people without those she cared about nearby if they were needed. Skysong was by nature fairly open and trusting, but enough people thought to kill dragons, or keep them in menageries as trophies, or otherwise make use of them, that caution was always justified.
