Myself.. I would move closer to where I work. The commute is a killer, especially to Tacoma from Seattle.
But then again, I hate spending hours in traffic or driving. It takes up too much time in an already hectic day.

True, but a morning commute from Seattle --> Tacoma is a lot less of a killer than from Tacoma --> Seattle, right?

Many of the other employees live in Seattle as well, so there are definitely carpool options if I can't find a bus/train commute.

My suggestion would be to spend about a week minimum checking the Seattle traffic in both the morning and afternoon to see how bad it would be. I live in Kent and my boyfriend works in Kirkland. It takes him a minimum of an hour to get home but that is a different freeway so I'm not sure.

Traffic on all the major freeways around here is horrible. Personally, I wouldn't want to make the trip between Tacoma/Seattle no matter the direction. The back-ups on I-5 can be horrible. Maybe spend a week or so checking out traffic reports online to see what the average times are?

As someone who grew up in Tacoma and visited my dad in Seattle every other weekend via bus, that's much better than commuting every day.

So for neighborhoods in Tacoma, I would suggest Proctor or the North End. Stadium's not bad, unless you mind lots of high schoolers wandering around

i think you could take the train? look into the sounder and see if that would help. i would NOT make that drive everyday. no way, no how.

I'd say West Seattle. You'd be a quick bus ride away from downtown where you could get the train down to Tacoma. This isn't to say your commute would be short, but at least you wouldn't be the one driving and you would be in Seattle. The Alaska Junction area is full of shops and restaurants and is a good walking neighborhood as well.

I've always felt like West Seattle was rather isolated from the rest of Seattle, though. Kind of feels like its own little separate town, IMO.

That isn't a bad thing to a lot of people, me included!

I'm aware that some people like that... just want the OP to know that if they're wanting something most connected to downtown proper, that may not be the best place. I personally like having easy access to downtown, but I have some friends who live in West Seattle and swear by it.

For the kind of neighborhood you're describing, I would suggest Fremont or Ballard. How well that would work for your commute, I don't know. There are buses from there to downtown, but I'm not sure if you'd have to switch buses to get further South.

Greenlake would also not be a terrible option and though it's a bit futher North, it is close to some park and ride lots, express bus lines, and the interstate and could therefore very possibly be better than commuting from Fremont or Ballard even though those are closer to downtown. Not quite the same atmosphere as Fremont/Ballard, but we lived there for a few years and I was very pleased with the amount of bars, cafes, restaurants, and parks within walking distance of our house.

This. And get a bus pass, because otherwise the traffic/drivers here will have you eating a gun by the end of the year. Ballard and Fremont have a very "Portland" feel to them. Live there until you're jaded and snarky enough to join the rest of us.
