If I could find this kind of position in Portland, I'd stay.

Just giving you grief. You're keeping your mod hat, I hope?

Heh, thanks - I'm not sure if that would be allowed!

ballard is an awesome neighborhood with all the features you are looking for, and i'd heartily recommend it, but getting to/from i-5 from there is a nightmare.

Ballard to Tacoma is an awful commute no matter the form of transportation. I love Ballard, but I'd avoid it for this situation.

Look at neighborhoods close to I-5. I'd avoid Ballard or North Queen Anne, probably also Fremont, unless you want to battle both city and freeway traffic.

Do not underestimate our traffic. It's ugly. I hope you handle stress well.

YES! Stick close to the 5. Greenlake, wallingford, etc. I live in Ballard and getting to the 5 can sometimes add an extra 15 minutes to my commute.

Capitol Hill, Columbia City, or Georgetown, I'd say! I did the Seattle to Tacoma commute last week and it was surprisingly easy. Most of the traffic is in the opposite direction.

Yeah, that factor seems to be missed by a lot of folks who have commented. Thanks for the recs!

Following up, because I'm actually taking a closer look at these 'hoods, do you or have you lived in any of them?

my husband and i are like you -- late 30s, no kids, i'm into visual art and he's into the music scene. we lived on capitol hill for 9 years and loved it, but we just bought a house in the mount baker neighborhood. for renting and being close to lots of restaurants, bars, shops, etc. i would highly recommend living on capitol hill, and then exploring other neighborhoods to buy property. our house now is closer to columbia city and georgetown, both great places to hang out, plus on the south side of downtown which will make your commute a little easier.

When you say you don't mind a long commute, what do you mean exactly? What are you thinking as far as time? The commute you're considering could easily take you 90 minutes, especially if you're using public transportation. I guess if you're ok with that...

Have you done this commute, at those times?

I had a friend who did (she took the bus). She left work at 5pm and didn't get home until 6:30. That was door-to-door.

I see in one of the other comments you're actually going to Federal Way. That makes a difference - every mile you are closer to Seattle, the better.
