Contesting a Basic Food award

Hello ladies and dudes. Has anyone here ever gone through with a hearing at DSHS to try and increase the amount of food stamps they're receiving?

Mine was recently cut from $130 a month to $16, for no apparent reason but I suspect it's because my boyfriend/roommate is making more financial aid than he was when I applied in the summer. He thinks I ( Read more... )

It's still not enough. I mean, sure we can afford use the extra cash for food, but it'd be nice if we could pay our water bill too.

No but I only eat caviar and saffron and they never carry those. :(

Seriously, not even going to get into this. If you can't answer my question, why are you wasting your time commenting at me?

No, they won't increase the amount if you beg.

They will increase the amount if there is an error and you are meant to get more. Which if the boyfriend has more income coming into the home.. then it sounds like there wasn't an error.

All you can do is go talk to them.

Are you and your boyfriend applying as 1 household or as roommates? If you've applied separately his income should not affect your food stamps. But if you applied as a couple your SOL. A lot of stamps when down because of COLA increases threw people into a different asset bracket.

I do this for a living so I'm happy to help if I can. Let me know!

We applied as a single household, but back in the summer they said he wasn't eligible to receive anything since he's a student who doesn't work 20 hours a week. So I wonder if the woman who interviewed me took him off the application then? And I inadvertently added him back on when I did the mid certification review...

I might try to apply as a single person next year then. :/ Thank you very much for the info.

Don't you know that poor people should just take whatever they're given, and scrape expired cans from the backs of food bank shelves? People on welfare are just getting too damn entitled these days, what with wanting to feed themselves and pay their bills and all.
