I have very little idea what I'm talking about here, but I think I remember overhearing someone talking about this, and saying that whatever kind they carry at most piercing places are the opposite of what Hot Topic carries.

"I want one where the threads are on the bar and not the ball."

And then:
"If anybody knows where I can get a piece of jewelry where the ball has the threads..."

Which one? Not like I know where you could get either. I'd suggest calling Laughing Buddha.

Good catch. Sorry, I got a call at the end of making the post. I meant the bar needs to be threaded. And, Laughing Buddha is one of the places I tried.

This question is relevant to my interests. I got my tragus pierced in England with a barbell where the hole was in the bar and the sticky-outy part was on the ball. I've lost the barbell and haven't found a replacement.

This is called "internally threaded" and is the only kind of jewelry any reputable piercing place will carry.

That's dumb. My internally threaded one was a bitch and a half, and NEVER STAYED TIGHTENED.

Grrrrr.

No, it's quite smart. Any reputable shop cares more about you tearing up your piercing (thereby introducing all sorts of nasty grimy things and increasing the risk of infection and scarring) than they would care about your lack of coordination. Because externally threaded jewelry is so unhealthy and undesirable, you will rarely find any that is made with quality materials, making it even more evil than just the tearing on its own.

Again, if you are so uncoordinated that you can't replace this sort of jewelry yourself, you're better off getting a retainer with rubber flanges that isn't going to tear up your piercing.

But, if you know everything and can't possibly get infected or scarred on a piercing that already has a high chance of rejection and migration, you can find externally threaded jewelry in any costume jewelry display in places like Claire's, The Icing, or Hot Topic.

Visit Pierced Hearts

But not many reputable shops are going to carry externally threaded body jewelry, fyi, because the The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) says "Threaded jewelry for initial piercings must have internal tapping (no threads on posts) starting from 16 gauge."

Mine is so far from initial (7 years old, now...and I hadn't removed the piercing from Germany but four times in 4 of those years)...

But, thanks for the tip. I'll probably try there tomorrow when I'm in the U-District.

Pierced Hearts won't have externally threaded body jewlery.
