i need to take mine in for it's annual tune up... would you say recycled is the best place for that?

i took it to gregg's last year... but found recycled after i broke my chain going over a bridge just before the u district. all i had to do was coast down the hill to their shop. they replaced the chain and my bill was $15. i walked out of there feeling almost guilty for getting such a good deal.

I've only ever been to Recycled and now 2020. I love Recycled and not just for being so close to my house. They have a great selection of parts and the service has always been quick and the people there are very friendly and knowledgeable. And yes, very good deals.

Yes I thought he was very nice when I dropped my bike off and I am sure he is good at fixing bikes. But his customer service sucks.

Why don't you like recycled?

you're not the first person I've heard with this kind of story, which is really suprising because 20/20 has been totally awesome for me. I've had work done there that had me on the road the same day, and significantly cheaper than elsewhere.

well damn. I can understand getting behind, especially in spring time when the weather is getting nicer and more people want to go on pleasure rides, I'm most upset about the lack of a phone call letting me know that they get behind.

first, i like the fact that half the people who posted here were at my house the night i moved from seattle. reminds me how small it is there.

second, i thought they had not fixed your bike properly? or left your wheel loose? (either way, once we all live in portland, you can just come over and we can work on them together! yay!)

The fact that you didn't get a call about the delay is understandably upsetting - especially when your bike is your mode of transportation - and not in line with good customer service skills.
Alex is a fine mechanic and has done great work for me and mine. I've found that at different times and for different problems I visit different bike shops. Each has it's strengths, weaknesses, products, and level of price gouging:
Counterbalance - great stuff, surly but good mechanics
Recycled - odds and ends and loads of used stuff, mechanics can be hit and miss
Mobius - great mechanic, fun atmosphere, where else are you encouraged to have a seat on the couch and drink a beer with your mechanic?
Aarons - smart smart guys, bike fitting, lots of touring resources
Wright Bros - classes and classics ( ... )

I know lots of people like Couterballance, but I'll never go there again. Adam has been a huge asshole to myself and friends when it was totally uncalled for. Sure, he's got a lot of fixed gear stuff, but I can get that from anywhere else. You don't have to talk down to me and be a jackass at the same time.

Seems like a great way to drive away business.

Yeah I've had similar experiences... I almost wonder if they think that kind of attitude adds charm to the shop.
I don't particularly like the guys there but to their credit they've always done good and fast work for me.

I could handle an asshole mechanic if he would actually fix my bike in a timely manner.

Just a big UseNet "Me too!" on the sorry you got a less than ideal experience at 2020 and I'd never trust Recycled with one of my bikes. OK, I'm biased for a couple of reasons.

- I'm a professional bike mechanic.
- Reasons listed by dennyt- In order to find anything good, you have to be a professional bike mechanic to make sure you get the right size, all the parts, tell if there is any life left in it and explain any of those to someone working there ( ... )

how do I score a gig like you've got?!

If I don't start working for a shop soon I'm going to have to rent a storage space for all my tools/parts/bikes!

Err...

Get a job at AOL, work there for eight years, totally "rock out cock out" in your job as a Tech Writer for two years, have wife get accepted to University of Washington, sell yourself to your boss, their boss and their boss' boss (meaning "You'd be fools to let me go as I have illustrated in this power point..."), have uber boss sign off on you working remote, then continue to "rock out cock out" while working remote.

It's not a sure fire thing and it requires a lot of time invested.

Ok so he's been swamped, I understand that. But then I suspect he is lying about deadlines to keep customers and no courtesy call when your shit is 2 weeks over due? That's ridiculous.
