Reading a story rarely makes me sob, but yours did. She scoops up the mingled ash and dirt and smears it onto her arms and face, her torso, rubbing it into all the red and sticky spots. Keeping him with her. - I think, this was a final straw.

Ah, Buffy. She stays on her feet until the danger has passed. What a heartbreaker...

Gorgeous and cruel, that's what you've done here.

all the other commenters have said it better than I could. Sad, painful and powerful, but such is life when we part with someone so dear to us that we weren't sure where they ended and we began

Well, shit. (I like "reckless dance" as a description of Spike's life. Such a good way to live, too.)

I'm fair certain Spike would think it apt. :) Thank you!

Oh.
So sad. And yet...I couldn't help being somewhat happy for them, too, because at least in your world they found happiness together for a while. This is so much more than either of them could've hoped for after Chosen, so I decided to leave the glass half full and focus on the times they had together...
Poor Buffy, though, left alone again. This had me choking up - 'She opens her arms wide. The wind picks up, scattering ash, and with a strangled cry, Buffy falls to her knees. She scoops up the mingled ash and dirt and smears it onto her arms and face, her torso, rubbing it into all the red and sticky spots. Keeping him with her.' - nothing left of him but dust.
Loved this: 'Together they watch, one with eyes closed but seeing all, the other with eyes open but seeing nothing.'
Excellently written as always! Thanks for sharing!

I decided to hone in on the bitter, but yes, there's definitely the undercurrent of sweet hidden in there. I think the not having a body to cling to would be pretty hard. :(

Buffy's not alone, at least. I'm glad you liked that part. Thank you!
