The sleek black Jaguar XJR came to a slow stop by the roadside. A twist and retract of the key ceased the gentle hum of the engine. The driver stepped out, closed the door and proceeded to walk towards his destination.
There was no doubt that he wanted to see the other man, but he held no haste in his steps. Every step was sure and steady. He ran his hands down the front lapels of his coat, attempting to smooth out any possible creases. It was to avoid causing any worry in the other man. Therefore, he always presented his best whenever they met, showing that he took good care of himself.
He glanced at the gloomy overcast winter morning sky and continued walking, not wanting to keep the other waiting in the cold.
The endless rows of graves on either side of the aisle he walked down caught none of his attention. A cemetery, a place of grief, sorrow and regrets. A final resting place for those relieved from pain and suffering.
Each of his steps down the grass path re-emphasized the pain hidden deep in his heart, unseen by the world. But he knew that comfort laid waiting for him in the man he was approaching.
And there he was. A figure in white standing in front of and looking at the tombstone they came to see each meeting; the expression on his face solemn with a hint of sorrow. The corners of his eyes were still moist with traces of tears that flowed past his cheeks. Even the chest area of his shirt and coat had small patches wet from his tears.
"Hyung." He called out gently to his elder brother. His heart became ladened with the knowledge that the other had been weeping. This was not the first time, and he knew that he would continue to be easily affected by any unhappiness in his brother.
They enveloped each other into an embrace. The longing in their hearts to see the other grew over the past few months, and this physical act served to release the stored sourness. With each meeting, joy burst into them, an insufficient amount they struggled with till the next time they got to see each other.
When they finally pulled apart, still linked by the intertwined fingers of a hand, it was like seeing the two extreme ends of a monochrome spectrum joined with a thin band of grey. Different as day and night, angel and devil; yet unsevered.
The elder was in a full suit of white. His soft angelic features built a face of innocence, and he emitted an air of peace under the present sombre circumstances. An angel on the grieving grounds of earth.
The younger was the total opposite in a full suit of black. His appearance and built seemed to defy his brother's status of seniority. The hard features on his face carried the strength of maturity. In addition, his toned torso and extra inches in height reinforced the illusion of added age.
"God, how did I survive till this day? I've missed you ever since the moment we last parted. How has everything been? Have you been taking good care of yourself?" Tears were threatening to spill from his eyes again.
"I've missed you too, Hyung. I'm fine but you've lost weight. Is.. he still making things difficult for you?"
Silence. The answer would hurt them both.
Then the elder spoke again, trying to ease the tension. "I've been busy recently. Business has picked up. I'll just be more mindful in future."
That smile cannot even add joy to a person already enraptured, Hyung. "Hyung, why don't you just move on, leave him? I can't bear to see you get hurt anymore." He asked in a whisper, as if a higher volume would add more pain to the other. "And besides, he was never supposed to be part of the plan. It was a mistake right from the beginning." Perhaps a factual reason would make him see logic enough to do as asked..
"I brought it upon mys.."
"No, Hyung. It's my fault! I shouldn't have planned for you to get near them. I'm sorry.." Tears welled up, but stayed. He had always been strong. This state of sadness clearly shows the surge of emotions resulting from knowing his brother's misery.
"Nobody's at fault. Especially you. No more of this. Not here in front of Omma. Shh..." He brought the younger into his arms, holding him close. It broke his heart to feel the tremble of the other's body, the attempt to control every bit of emotion.
After a moment of silent comfort, they started a hushed discussion, exchanging important information. The brothers went their separate ways once they had said what was necessary. Brotherly affections should not get in the way of their plan's success, not after what they had already gone through.
