In Which I Prattle On About My Name

Oct 12, 2006 16:13

On the subway a woman mentioned to her friend that she heard "her" song on the radio this morning-"Jane", by the Barenaked Ladies, which she joked was named after her (presumably, her name was Jane). That got me thinking about my name, and how there will never be a song named after me.

Really pointless dissertation on my name )

My parents did a pretty good job with making my sister's name mockproof, too. There's not much you can do with "Stephanie" ... unless you are a dedicated, motivated older brother, in which case you can mutate it to a tear-inducing degree with even a marginal degree of effort.

Perhaps I had a slightly different relationship with my younger sister than you had with your brothers.

It's true that Murray is not too mangleabe, but on that immortal day when your mom added your *middle* name... gosh darn but that was so cute.

I have never seen my name on anything, but when I was little, my mom paid big bucks to have my name custom printed on a little plaque for my door. And a few years' back, Davesbrain and Mrs. Davebrain got me a bathrobe with my name embroidered on it, which I cherish.

Yeah, it's pretty simple now, hey? Type it up/design it on your computer, and have it printed on a t-shirt, embroidered on a hat, engraved on a plaque.

Kids today have it so easy, I tells ya! *smacks dentures*

'course you have yet a third name-curse: That of the *mistaken* mangling - in spelling and, I presume, in pronunciation.

I had the opposite problem. My name was *EVERYWHERE* where I grew up and by the time highschool rolled around there were like...3 or 4 of us in the same damned grade.

I love that your mom cared enough to make sure that you didn't get any of those horrible nicknames; you'd not beleive what they did to my last name....

Oh, I know what they did to your last name. I also refute the statement "you'd not believe what they did..." because I believe kids are capable of any level of cruelty at certain stages of life. I stand by my statement: the cruelest creature on the planet is the 11-year-old girl.

Well, yeah; although I'd hoped you'd forgotten. I know I wish I could.

Oh. Yes. Positively evil.

Jennifer -- one of the most common names ever. I got my name on EVERYTHING, and it annoyed the hell out of me. The only thing I have now is a keychain I got six years ago that says my name, only because I'm too lazy to shop for a new one.

As far as getting made fun of... they didn't really rhyme stuff. They just called me names in school. Gotta love children!
