Not sure if it is the same for the Mac, but I suspect that it /could/ be. For the PC, I go to c64.com and type in the name of the C-64 program, then click the "download" icon. It gives me a file that ends in .D64, which is what my emulator is looking for as a virtual disk. For my emulator, I press the key that emulates checking the 1541 disk drive, use my cursor keys to highlight "elite.d64" and press enter.
I'm sure it will be something similar for your emulator, and it may very well read the exact same elite.d64 file the exact same way (since both PC and Mac versions are emulating the same computer).
Mine kind of froze on the C-64 blue screen, after printing LOAD"*",8,1 on the screen. When I used my emulator's "TurboLoad" feature, however, it booted up right away.
What was the name of that LucasArts game where you landed on the planet, rescued astronauts who may or may not be bug-eyed aliens? Oh, Rescue at Fractilus...now I remember.

So far I've only got Elite and "Impossible Mission" (Stay awhile... stay FOREVAH!). Once I get my joystick functioning, I'll go for more.
