What the hell is the point of a website forcing me to choose a "better" password?

Indeed. But of course, they are not interested in ensuring you *are* secure so much as they are interested in ensuring that they cannot be viewed as *liable* for a security breach.

You can hear their lawyers in court: "Your honour, p22 para 3 of our security readme specifically says we recommend that users not write down their password."
