Thank you! I'm glad you are reading them, and that you have the Fagles translation... You know at first we didn't like that translation at all, since he takes liberties, but I have to say, he's made it so much more approachable for so many readers. And there really is a flow to his writing that is rather lovely.

That's what I like about it too; it's a bit easier to understand. I like The Odyssey better than the Iliad though; I know the storyline much better and it's a bit more entertaining to me. I also have his translation of The Aeneid (I haven't read it yet, since I'll be translating at least parts of it next fall).~Sophia

Do thyself a favor and get thyself a copy of the Pharr (trust the Hawkeyed Goddess on this one...!) Fagles isn't going to help you much with the Latin; he's way too poetic. You would be better off with one of those old fashioned line-by-line translations, if you can find one: scope out libraries and used book stores, they sometimes turn up there. Also I suppose you know Perseus. I wouldn't recommend relying on that, though: it tempted me all the way through grad school, my Greek is crap because of it...!

Also very helpful for beginners, though it's only selections, is the Longman Latin Reader. My teacher Gil Lawall edited it: it was one of the first texts I ever read in Latin, actually. I used to sit in his office every Tuesday afternoon while I was at UMass, drinking tea and reading the Aeneid in preparation for my semester in Rome.
