I saw Sweeney Todd tonight.  I am continuously astonished by the depth shown by Depp and Bonham Carter.  Pulling off a role like this without any formal vocal training and still having control over facial and body expression is really damn impressive.  Also, things like the opening credits really show off Burton's vision and skills ( Read more... )

I'm just sad they never sand the Ballad of Sweeney Todd. I kept waiting for it to happen and it never materialized. But overall I liked it too.

I suppose this is the advantage to not remembering (much) the actual musical . . . I remembered the plot and that was about it. I wonder why he cut it out.

I don't know. If I had to guess, it would be because it's too meta and self-referential. But it's also great, and the entire score seems to be vamping for it throughout the show, so there's a real lack of musical climax.
