I saw Sweeney Todd tonight. I am continuously astonished by the depth shown by Depp and Bonham Carter. Pulling off a role like this without any formal vocal training and still having control over facial and body expression is really damn impressive. Also, things like the opening credits really show off Burton's vision and skills.
Bloody film though. Dang. I'm glad I'm not a guy 'cause I don't think I'd be able to shave ever again. I'm not a big fan of musicals or of this play in particular, but this version was really well made. As a singer I didn't cringe (much), possibly because I recognized that Burton didn't choose singers, he chose people who could act and then tested them to see if they could also sing. Good for him.
