In the help-japan auction, I won the artistic services of shiftly, and after much hemming and hawing on my part to decide what I wanted, I asked for a Babs/Dick drawing. She sent me some sketches (which were frankly ALL amazing) and I picked one for her to make into the art. Well she finished it and sent it to me the other day and now I am here to share it with ( Read more... )

I haven't read the book "Room", but the premise disturbed and intrigued me so much that I searched the internet for a full synopsis. I don't think I have it in me to read something like that (see: didn't read The Road). Honestly, it's hard for me to endure the fact that people can do such evil things to each other - even in fiction.

PS That's a GREAT illustration, you lucky dog.

It's interesting, the horribleness of the premise is actually tempered by the narrator being the young boy. You never really have to face it head-on, so the book really deals more with the fallout of it rather than the terrible crime. Though there are some really tense moments where as the reader you know what's happening even if the boy doesn't. It was a tough book to read, overall.

I loved Room and recommended it up and down to people, because apparently I don't have as much concern for my friends as you do. ;) I thought it was harrowing and so well written from a child's point of view. You could tell how much thought the author put into the situation and how it would affect them both. One or two moments really disturbed me, but I think that just shows how sucked into it I was. It stayed in my head for a long time.

YES. I was AMAZED at how well-thought out everything was, how she examined all the angles, especially all of their reactions and fallout after they left room. Like the easy sunburning and his reaction to wind and rain and how loud and big things were. It was really amazingly detailed and I thought she did an incredible job with the POV. It's still stayed with me, too. I'm glad I read it.

My only issue was that I felt a little slammed over the head with her message at the end of it, even though it's a message I agree with!

You are not alone in being unprepared mentally for the end of GoT last night. I lost my father in February, but I thought that I would be okay considering that I read the book such a short time ago, and dealt with Ned's death then. However, watching the girls' reaction, specifically Sansa's was just too much for me.

the show and everyone involved is getting better by the episode, but it will be a while before I can appreciate that one.

I was going to choose Room as my book club pick, but then I chickened out because one of the members seemed squeamish about it. I kind of wish now that I had - it's still on my "to read" list.

It's definitely worth reading. It's one of those books that has stayed with me.
