Yeah, as soon as I saw the kids were the same age I went "oh no". Because that seemed to confirm that there really was no kick.
Though I must admit, I don't understand why his father being there is a factor? I mean, he was already planning a trip there, right? (Since Cobb told the kids that grandpa would bring them something and then he gave him the bag with stuffed animals to give to them when they met in Paris.)
When Cobb gave his dad the gifts for the kids he said 'for the next time you see them'. There was never a mention he would be there when Cobb landed in LA. So I found it too convenient his father was there waiting for him at the airport. For me, Cobb was imagining a big, happy family reunion.
I haven't seen the movie (yet), but yes, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is supremely awesome. If you want to check out some more supreme awesomeness I'd strongly recommend you check out the following:
Mysterious Skin Manic Latter Days Sweet Jane
They are all great indie movies, not necessarily easy viewing but writing and acting is top notch.
Starting from the first 15 minutes or so, I kept expecting the big reveal to be that this was all a dream, but there's nothing in that last scene that's 100% indicative of it being a dream or not.
(What set off my 'this-is-a-dream' theory was the Cobb-Cobol Corporation connection. I found the names way too similar to be coincidental, and Cobol Corp was painted as this dark, shady corp in the background. I thought they were going to do something more with that, ultimately leading to the reveal that most (all?) of the movie was in Cobb's head.
BUT YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY REWATCH IT, CAUSE I HAD EVEN MORE FUN THE SECOND TIME AROUND.

1) No kick (that we saw) back to reality
2) His dad being at the airport
3) The kids were the same age as his dream and wearing the same clothes
4) And, of course, the top was still spinning
