So a discussion at the Berkshire house led to the subject of the internet today, and blogging/journaling came up. Kathy said that anyone who posted in an online journal is self-absorbed and vain to think there are people out there who live off of seeing your news and that the whole thing was pointless. I felt kind of hurt, but I do wonder, what is ( Read more... )

Maybe we are a little self-absorbed. Who cares? It's not hurting anyone unless you post obsessively.

Personally, I read it to know how my friends are doing and I write in it for two reasons: half the time it's because I need to rant/get feedback on my issues and the other half of the time is to tell people about stuff going to in my life.

I don't think you should feel bad saying that you know there are people who want to read about your life because there are!

I agree with the kiddo above. I personally don't believe in livejournals as something really journal-isque; I keep my personal journal (on le' paper!) for things I want to remember at the moment, at that time, good or bad. I wouldn't want to let just anyone read it.
My Livejournal, however, is exactly how AJ described. Something I want to share with the world. Yeah, a little self absorbed? Well, we ALL are, so it's really no big deal. =)

Sometimes, you just have to let it out. It's human.

I know exactly how you feel... and how Caitlin feels! At the beginning of sophomore year of college I decided to go back to paper journal because I thought I'd write in it more frequently and I'd know for certain that the things I wrote in it would be honest and I'd always have it around, in case livejournal blew up or something. But then I posted something one day about how "lots has happened but I keep a pen and paper journal now" and Caitlin commented and said come back to LJ because she missed my entries! I know I'm awful at keeping in touch anyway, especially with talking on the phone, so even if I had called her I probably wouldn't have said everything that I would have posted in a journal entry ( ... )

I agree with everyone above. LJ is just a more organized and current medium for recording and sharing thoughts. Unlike email, no one is "forced" to read. You are not assuming someone cares by sending them a frivolous break-down of your week. You are allowing certain people access to your ideas without forcing them to read and respond. Its all about choices!

I don't think it's self-absorbed at all, you're right, it's to let people know how you're doing in your life, and in the words of my friend it's "exposing yourself".

When you write in a journal, you can't expose yourself unless you're hoping for someone to secretly find it. I don't like writing in a journal, personally, because it takes to damn long, and I find my handwriting ridicuously sloppy. You were right again in saying that in writing an e-mail, one must be specific and mindful in to whom they are writing to, but in a journal, it's yours, so you can screw everyone else and just write how you feel.

Sorry I've been so slack in updating mine, I'm going to just write a huge one soon, I swear!

btw, miss you toooooooooooooooo much!
