...when the Blizzard of '78 hit?

What wikipedia has to say about The Blizzard of '78Me, I was in the 8th grade. I was in school when it started snowing. They didn't release us early. I remember that the bus ride home was quite the adventure and it took well over an hour ( Read more... )

Hee, I remember it. I was living in Maryland, and we got it too - I was in high school, and classes were canceled for a solid week, and they made us make up the missed days at the end of the school year. How rude is that?

I don't remember if they made us make up the time or not. The town was notoriously stingy about calling snow days. During other storms, every surrounding town would be called off but not mine.

I was in Wilmington. I couldn't go anywhere because the sidewalks were unwalk-able and the streets had, well, CARS on them, with walls of snow on each side of the street twice as tall as me. And I was sixteen at the time, so, yeah. Huge bunches of snow.

We walked in the streets because it was the only place you could walk.

Holy moly! I've never seen that much snow at once in my whole life! That's downright alarming. Wow.

No way that was 30 years ago.

Was it really?? I was just telling someone on my FList that I ought to write up my experience during that storm, before the details were lost to the wrinkled recesses of my brain. Mountains of coke; hookers; twincest; rentboys.... I'd truly lost track of how long ago that was..... Good times. *g*

It really doesn't seem possible that it was 30 years ago, does it?

I still really can't believe it. Thirty years. Huh.

I enjoyed reading your memories of that storm and am glad you were old enough to appreciate its magnitude.

Is it wrong that I'd kind of like to have another storm like that again? ;)

As long as I didn't have to drive in it and didn't lose power and the governor shut the state done for a week, I'd be okay with it. *g*

Okay, the blizzard of '78 doesn't mean anything to me, naturally. But the pictures? And the movie? *loves*

It was one of those "once in a 100 years" type of storms. Three lows combined off the coast and then were held in place by an arctic high. The result was a day and a half of continuous snow with hurricane force (75+ mph) winds. There was also a lunar high tide so the coastal towns really got battered.

We really thought the plow would get stuck or breakdown trying to move all that snow.
