*dusts off hands*  Well then. I have 2 freshly written and enveloped checks all set to mail out in the morning.... and they effectively pay off all college debt.  Suprisingly, i almost dont know how to feel... elated, overwhelmed?  My grandma had set up a college savings (not really a savings... a something or other that makes money) when i was ( Read more... )

Awesomeness all around!!! *glomp* I'm super impressed that you have officially kicked Sallie Mae to the curb, regardless of how it was done that's worth celebrating! Poor old lady will be hanging around this house for quite a while longer I'm afraid, but your emancipation is inspiring to the rest of us... :)

That's awesome. And if you're paying back into your savings account, then eventually it will be like paying the account off, in which case it will be more like help towards a car or what have you, than towards college, if you prefer to think of it that way. But I mean, if she put it there as a college savings account, I'm sure she would be proud that you used it to further your education.
The main thing that keeps it from being Orchard Park-like, either way, is appreciating the full value of the gift, and seeing it as a gift rather than feeling entitled. You expected nothing and appreciate everything.
Also, if it kills the interest, that's just a financially sound investment.

Either way you should be proud, both of having paid off college, and of asking for your well-earned raise :)
