You can see the minimap in most of the boat-exploration screencaps, but for the ones where you can't:
- the woods with the glowy rocks are located pretty much in the dead center of the Kingdom, and are accessible from the northern coast. - Gleston is in the southwestern region of the Kingdom. - the Hermit's Hideout (which is actually just a house in the middle of nowhere, though you can't tell from the screencap) is way down in the south of the Empire.
As for where the different countries are....you can start to see their outlines on the minimap at this point--top left is the Empire, top right is the Kingdom, and Paragon Island (formerly the Republic) is sort of between them and to the south.
It's great when you finally get a boat or airship and can really see the world, especially when there's a lot that's new. It's more disappointing if they don't give you the ship or whatever until you've already seen most of the world and it just becomes a glorified shortcut.
