Cover Up
"Kagetoki-san..?" Nozomi called out his name hesitantly as she peered into the older man's room. No answer followed. The blinds were halfway down and blocked off most of the light from the veranda. Once her eyes grew accustomed to the dimness she realized the teal-haired man was nowhere inside. Puzzled, Nozomi took a step past the sliding door. "Saku said he'd be here since he's not doing laundry..."
Just as she turned to go her eyes caught a flash of familiar green and gold cloth. Kagetoki's coat, if it could even be called that with its lack of sleeves, lay in a pool of sunlight underneath the blinds. Nozomi's brow furrowed and concern streaked through her. Had there been an intruder on the grounds than no one noticed and the garment torn off during a struggle? She picked up the fine fabric and looked it over carefully, but it was undamaged and clean.
A sigh of relief sapped most of Nozomi's energy, and she hugged the jacket gratefully. The familiar scent of plum blossoms reached her nose, along with undertones of musk. Blinking in surprise at how pleasant the combination smelled, Nozomi smiled and inhaled deeply again.
She had never really had an opportunity to see his coat up close before. It fell in almost liquid lines between her hands when she shook it out carefully. The strange embellishment done with red and gold spheres felt smooth beneath the strokes made by curious fingers, and the golden rope that bound them together had a rough texture despite the fineness of the individual threads.
Slowly, she turned the garment this way and that while her fingers explored along every seam and plane of deep green fabric. Vision and touch followed gently along the contours of the delicate magnolia outline done in white. Her eyes closed as she let the soothing scent it held fill her lungs once more.
"Nozomi-chan..?" a bright but hesitant voice called out from the doorway.
Startled, she whirled around with the garment still hugged to her chest. "Kagetoki-san! I..." Nozomi glanced down at his coat and blushed, unsure how long he had been there and how best to explain herself.
Kagetoki fidgeted where he stood. "Saku said you were looking for me?" he supplied helpfully.
"Yes!" The answer left her too loudly and with more emphasis than she meant to use. She took a breath to calm herself. "Um... Saku said you were probably here but all I found was your coat, so I thought maybe something had happened..."
A hand scratched at his head sheepishly. "It's gotten warm since spring is almost over, so I left it here while I went out to take care of some things... I'm sorry if I worried you."
Nozomi shook her head quickly and held the garment toward him with both hands as she approached. "It's all right, I'm just glad nothing's wrong." Her bright smile could not cover up the blush that remained in her cheeks, but it distracted from the telltale color.
As Kagetoki slipped the fabric over his shoulders he too had an embarrassed smile. "Everything's just fine." A gloved hand reached up to pat her on the head lightly. "Now, what was it you were looking for me for?" He guided her out of the room and back down the hall as he spoke.
Embarrassing situation mostly forgotten, Nozomi recalled the reason for her visit launched into a request for his help in the city the next day.
