Sometimes it's because people whack the button like a regular SamTimer (with the bouncy buttons). The buttons on the Pocket SamTimer need to be pressed down. Not to say that they aren't still pieces of crap, but I've never had the problem you describe. I have, however, had two of them just turn off in the middle of a tournament game, which is why I won't use them if another clock is available (like you say, they should be considered "less preferred").
