Summary: I was recently asked if I had an opinion on the difference between spoken word and poetry. This open letter is all the answer you will ever need on that eternal debate.

I personally feel that spoken word encompasses even more than that. I would say that storytelling and even stand up comedy fall within the realm of "spoken word."

I am so old school, that when I think of spoken word, I think of Lydia Lunch,Laurie Anderson & Henry Rollins.

Yeah, and I'd throw in monologist like Spalding Gray and Eric Bogosian, etc. as well...even though it's theatre I still think it falls under "spoken word."

Yeah, this article is pretty much only for the POETS who call themselves spoken word artists, not the spoken word artists who call themselves spoken word artists. The letter was certainly written to someone who needed that distinction made.
