An Experiment: Walking Poetry's America, Pt. 2

This experiment is consuming me.

I have done a fair amount of research on just the walking/hiking/running of America. It has been done numerous times, and not just by Forrest Gump.

In an effort to not reinvent the wheel entirely, one of the most popular areas of my research has been the American Discovery Trail, or ADT. It is a stretch of trails, ( Read more... )

Theorizing the ultimate question:

"If you walk x miles per day will you hit a poetry reading each(y) day?"

If the answer is no, then amp the feed (y) to every other day, depending on the miles, and amp it (y) again until the answer is yes.

Then determine if the gauge is, in fact, impressive enough to care...or attempt.

Someone else's math:

"If you hike 15 miles a day, and take one rest day a week, it takes about 390 days (or 56 weeks) to cover 5,000 miles."

Note that this is without any consideration other than "get from point A to point B", which this experiment is not. It would take much longer.

two places to look...

1. look at the Peter Mulvey No Gasoline Tour. might be a good starting point for feasibility of concept.

2. get a good road map & look at highways. i would suggest starting with Rt. 20. it cuts coast to coast & is walkable. this would be the most likely way to find a reading every night. (or at least every other night)

there was also a guy from worcester who walked all 50 states & wrote a book about it. it was part of a study by U Mass on the effects of walking & he kept very detailed notes on where he went, what he saw & even how much loose change he picked up. i'll see if i can track the book down.
