Larry's last night

Went to Larry's last night ( one more visit and I can mark it off my lis for this year!) and saw feature Fred Anderle.  A nice night, with a packed room, almost assuredly for Fred.  Larry's absolutely refuses to advertise their night, so it is only instinct and tradition that made me check to see if they were starting tonight.  Fred is the sweetest ( Read more... )

Thanks. :-)

So you've got a quota for Larry's? I was surprised to see so many people there.

John Rambo, Esq! Wow, one minute you were flipping back and forth between pages writing it, then you were reading it (and it's just the wry humor that venue would go for, I think), then it seemed you were back to writing it again.

I do, but only for the purposes of goal achievement. I had to set some kind of number to quantify the goal, so 4 visits seemed fair. It's not that I'd hit 4 and stop, but I need to do at least 4.

I have a whole analogy for why I go to Larry's:

Going to Larry's is, for me, like going to the gym.

As someone who is (more or less) serious about their craft, I'm always looking for a challenge, or a different way to address old challenges. Larry's makes me work different muscles, try different things, or try old things a different way. All of this builds up non-performative muscles.

So when I get new ideas or words, it's like packing on straight muscle for size. When I try to write a poem on the spot to perform in their open mic, it's like doing quick reps to hone what muscle I have. When I decide to perform that poem on the spot, it's like running a whole circuit of training.

If I could get my body to follow my craft I'd be the sexiest poet you ever saw. Yes, even sexier than that one.

"John Rambo, Esq." was a nice circuit.

I should also note that there's a big difference betwen being dedicated to your poetry and being dedicated to the craft of poetry.
