Camera Recommendations?

I’m pondering a new digital camera, and I’m seriously thinking about getting a DSLR.

I’ve so far determined that the Nikon D40 is about right, but you can only get so much from online reviews and the shops I’ve been into either haven’t had it or have been so busy I couldn’t play with it…

So, does anyone out there have one or have experience with? ( Read more... )

I have experience with the D40. It's the one I use at school. My teacher calls it quite a lot of camera for not too much money. I was happy with it. It's reasonably easy to work with, and you get nice pictures with it ( ... )

Thanks very much for all the info. This is exactly the sort of stuff I was hoping I might get! : ) (And I really like your teacher's description...)

Your photos are really good, and I really like the colour in the one of the balloons. What is the course you are doing (if you don't mind my being nosy)?

Glad to be of service!
Happy to hear the photos looked good, and that you weren't too freaked out by the nosebleed-self portrait. ;)

I'm doing media productions, which means we learn the basics in journalism, radio journalism, news journalism for the tv, photography and movie making (we've made several short films).
It's quite interesting, and I've learned a lot, but I'm only doing it for one year, so I'll be done in a few weeks. After that, I'll hopefully study movie productions in England.

I remember when you posted the nosebleed pics on your lj, and thought they were cool then too (if slightly bloody... *g*)

Your programme sounds really neat, I pondered media studies once upon a time, and can't remember why I ruled it out. Think it had something to do with availability of jobs in Halifax...

Hope the England plan works out! (You going to be in London for the meetup in October?)

I've never owned one, but I was looking into a DSLR for a while too, and I did hear it's a good camera for the price range. The main downside appears to be that the autofocus is not built into the body. This means that if you want autofocus as an option you need to buy autofocus lenses. Generally this isn't a problem, especially if you're buying a zoom lens, but prime lenses frequently won't have autofocus built in unless you buy expensive ones. Also Nikon lenses are expensive generally ( ... )

Ooh, ta! Sam's pics really are good... do you know if he did any fiddling with them, or are they straight from the camera?

Went to the shops yesterday, but Pentax seem to be less common here. May have a poke about in July when we're home.

(Also, Happy Birthday for tomorrow, if I don't get a chance to get online at work...)

I honestly have no clue as to what to tell you, but I hope that you have good luck finding a camera...

Thanks, I went to the shops yesterday for a play, so its a bit clearer now, but I'm still rather bamboozled. I need a loaner really so I can have a couple days to play...
