Camera Recommendations?

I’m pondering a new digital camera, and I’m seriously thinking about getting a DSLR.

I’ve so far determined that the Nikon D40 is about right, but you can only get so much from online reviews and the shops I’ve been into either haven’t had it or have been so busy I couldn’t play with it…

So, does anyone out there have one or have experience with? ( Read more... )

I have experience with the D40. It's the one I use at school. My teacher calls it quite a lot of camera for not too much money. I was happy with it. It's reasonably easy to work with, and you get nice pictures with it.
If you want examples, these are some of the pictures I've take with it:

Of course, I have used photoshop on all of them. I took pictures in color and switched some of them to black and white in photoshop. You can put the camera on B/W, but doing so in photoshop is better for the quality. I've also played around with Curves on all of these pictures in photoshop. It sounds sort of like the picture is created in photoshop when I say it like that, but there source material is very important, so the quality of the camera was vital in the making of the picture.

My recommendation? By the camera and photoshop. Works very well together, that does!

(This was probably a lot more info than you really needed, wasn't it?)

Thanks very much for all the info. This is exactly the sort of stuff I was hoping I might get! : ) (And I really like your teacher's description...)

Your photos are really good, and I really like the colour in the one of the balloons. What is the course you are doing (if you don't mind my being nosy)?

Glad to be of service!
Happy to hear the photos looked good, and that you weren't too freaked out by the nosebleed-self portrait. ;)

I'm doing media productions, which means we learn the basics in journalism, radio journalism, news journalism for the tv, photography and movie making (we've made several short films).
It's quite interesting, and I've learned a lot, but I'm only doing it for one year, so I'll be done in a few weeks. After that, I'll hopefully study movie productions in England.

I remember when you posted the nosebleed pics on your lj, and thought they were cool then too (if slightly bloody... *g*)

Your programme sounds really neat, I pondered media studies once upon a time, and can't remember why I ruled it out. Think it had something to do with availability of jobs in Halifax...

Hope the England plan works out! (You going to be in London for the meetup in October?)

It's okay, but there's a lot of focus on stuff I don't want to do, like journalism. Unfortunately, that seems to be what I'm best at.

I'll know if I get to study in England sometime during the next 2-7 weeks, and if I am, I most certainly will be going to the meetup in October!
