Although Itachi was very rarely grateful for the hardships in his life, his past had undoubtedly prepared him for what awaited in the future, both back home, and here in Anatole. Training as a shinobi, but also as ANBU, had increased his awareness of the world around him...

The amount of trust he could invest in others had greatly suffered, however, but he had always believed that it was for a good cause.

In Konoha, while he had been one of theirs, it had been to keep the peace. Amongst Akatsuki it had been to protect Sasuke. And here in Anatole, well... Sasuke was gone now, but this place was still his new home. He wanted very much to put his skills to use, but there existed a part of him as well that wanted to avoid the hardships that bonds would bring, the disappointment and uncertainty, lack of trust, loss and betrayal ( ... )

She did have a gift when it came to finding trouble. It made life unneccessarily hard for her. Her current struggle was a good example. Why did the doorknob insist on being out of reach when she just happened to have her arms full? Elena leaned forward, finally turning it. The door swung open, sending her down the first few steps a little faster than she intended ( ... )

If he listened carefully, Itachi could hear Elena as she descended into the basement of the building, various emphatic exclamations from her occasionally interrupting the silence.

A woman of unquestionable skill and talent, outside of her profession Elena was still just someone desiring of recognition, a woman that aimed to stand out... which sometimes meant standing out when one didn't want to.

Itachi felt that now was one of those times, and although he could give her silent credit for getting this far without having drawn further attention from others, he would have to give her a lesson in being discreet later on. Providing she is not up to something I am going to disapprove of, he thought ( ... )

"Maybe next time."

Elena muttered the words before busying herself again. This wasn't the time to take vengeance on some slick dealer, especially not when it's a trick that Elena would've pulled herself. She stood and placed the guns on the rack, a spot that they'd occupied for a couple of months at one point. She took a step back and studied them before removing one again, her eyes scanning the surface of the barrel.

"He didn't even take care of them."

She sighed, placing the gun on the table amidst wires and sticks of tnt before picking up a yellow legal pad. Gun maintenance was scribbled at the bottom of a steadily growing list.

"...Am I really gonna have to do all of this alone."

The words, ones that she normally didn't dare say, escaped her lips while her mind was busy elsewhere. And now that they were out...

Elena sank to the basement floor with a groan. She was only human, there were moments when even she could feel overwhelmed. And this was one of them.
