[ shirley had watched tonks leave the clinic, saying nothing nor making her presence known. it was something she had to do herself, uninterrupted and brave-faced. when the woman returns, though, is different. ]

Busy day?

[ when she calls to tonks, she is pulling a blanket up to a sleeping patient's chest. it probably looks strange to someone that doesn't know her daily activity in the clinic - like something too maternal for a woman as controlled as shirley, like she is incapable of it. or maybe just chooses to not do. ]

[ She stops on her way to her room. Tonks turns and faces Shirley. ]

No, not really.

[ It's the truth at any rate. Her day had been disappointing and sad. ]

[ standing straight, she leaves the patient to sleep and approaches the other woman. ]

But you left.

[ leaving doesn't mean it was busy; leaving means it was successful, for all the disappointment. ]

Yeah, I left. I wish I hadn't though.

[ She is still so quick to anger and it shows on her face. Wankers. Tonks knows that they were just things but they were her things! ]

[when crossing from the ruins to the docks, the shortest path to take leads right through the market. And one when doesn't bloody well feel like taking circuitous paths just to avoid trailing slime in public, one jolly well trails slime through the street in public.

So at a certain moment in the street, she may be passed by Spike, covered head to toe in something really gross that might be an unrecognisable shade of monster blood, or another unrecognisable shade of swamp muck, or some reconstitution of Mist that's taken gelatinous form, or a spa treatment gone spectmuckularly awry. Anyone who catches his eye will get a raised eyebrow back.

Tonks, now, seems to momentarily catch his attention. Whether either of them will say anything to the other, in their various states and substances of engulfment, remains to be seen.]

[ Tonks stops in her tracks when she catches sight of Spike. Her mouth opens slightly and she is quick to lift a hand to cover it. For a moment, she doesn't feel so bad about her day because at least she's not covered in that.

She's almost sorry for laughing, almost. ]

It was Arthur's sword which had started their friendship, in some ways. There hadn't been much more than animosity between them until Arthur had promised to do what Nymphadora had thought others could not. To put her out of her misery if she needed it ( ... )

One day, she will say thank you. One day Tonks will be completely open and honest with her feelings. It will not be today or even tomorrow. She still hurts. She's still angry. She's still unsure.

While Tonks is on the path to recovery, it is still hard for her to articulate most of her feelings.

When she enters the Dojo she doesn't have her wand in sight. It is on her person, tucked safely into a holster at her calf which is concealed by her trousers. Tonks wasn't worried about fighting in her dress. She could fight in wizard robes (which were much longer and more voluminous), she could fight in this. However, she didn't have to. She had borrowed a white tunic and trousers from the clinic.

"Listen, I think you should know. I'm a bit of a klutz. If I happen to step on your foot, it's probably not intentional."

Her path to recovery is a long one but every so often some of her old self shows through. The number of occurrences are increasing.

Once, Arthur wasn't very fond of Tonks' quips. It's not that he has no sense of humour, simply that his is very specific, often cruel, often dark, never (or barely ever) at his own expense. So when she'd made fun of him in the past it had made him scowl and stiffen. Now he cherishes each time her vivid personality shines through her sadness, a brief glimpse of sunlight through the clouds.

"We're not dancing. I don't know that you'll have the opportunity to step on my toes," Arthur replies, wry. "But if you accidentally run me through, I'll rest easy knowing it's because you're clumsy." A beat, and then he's tossing on of the swords at her. "Catch ( ... )

"No, we're not. I don't think your toes could handle that amount of damage." A small grin plays at the corner of her lips, "Yeah. You can rest easy knowing it's not an affront to your abilities ( ... )

[Reaching up toward a leaf, unaware of the presence of anyone or anything in this moment.

Staring at the sunlight as it hits and refracts off the surface. Patterns speckle her cheeks like a host of phantasmagoric fireflies.]

Oh...

[ Tonks catches Lust unaware from behind. She clasps her hands together at her waist, unsure of how to proceed. ]

It's you.

[Turns, peering over a shoulder through a curtain of dark hair.]

I hear that a lot.

[Her smile is surprisingly self effacing as she takes a moment to gaze at the other woman.]

Do you play the piano?

[So random, Lust. Yes, there is an actual train to her thoughts, I promise!]

I didn't mean anything specific by it. I just wasn't expecting to run into you here.

[ Sure Tonks. ]

No. I don't. Why d'you ask?
