Riza lead the way into the room, a dog and a little boy in tow. She liked Miss Shirley a lot, but she felt bad that she and all the other children had been creating a ruckus in the clinic for so long that she thought it might be nice to at least remove herself and Spencer from the mess.

"He's nice," she explained to Spencer, meaning Hughes. "He helped me get out of that place full of guns where I woke up. And I think he's friends with somebody really really smart and trustworthy, so he must be good." Because in her eyes, anyone that was friends with Roy Mustang was beyond reproach.

"I know I don't," Spencer said with a slight shrug of a shoulder, "but I want to."

It's what he was used to, after all, taking care of others. Although, admittedly, Riza wasn't his mom nor was she mentally ill, but it made him feel slightly better to be able to do something for someone. If only because it eased that ache in his heart just slightly and made him feel like he wasn't going crazy.

She stared at him for a minute more before reaching out to gently take the empty plate out of his hands and hold it carefully in her smaller ones.

"Then I'll get the things you want for you." And she smiled. Looking after someone else gave her a sense of comfort and familiarity the same way it did for him.

Just sort of blinks at Riza, the plate that she just took from him and then back at her again. He looks so confused. "But--"

"I want to help you," she said simply, before turning to survey the food. "What do you want to eat?"

Spencer still stared at Riza, looking slightly out of his element. It's not often that someone forcibly tries to take care of him, and he looks slightly out of his element. "I... don't know."

Because he's never really thought about it before.

She blinked at him like he'd just said something very odd.

"You don't know what you like?" She was confused at how someone could just not know what foods they wanted. Even she knew what she wanted to eat, even if she could rarely manage to cook it on the budget her father set.

[threedoctorates]

"I usually just make whatever we have that I can afford to buy." Spencer replied, biting his lip in thought, as he glanced back over the table.

After a few moments, he finally points at a couple of things. "I guess I'll try those."

"Yeah, it's the same at my house. We don't have a lot, but sometimes I get to buy some pretty good stuff."

She diligently collected the things he pointed at and put them on the plate. "Those look pretty good." She pointed to some kind of smallish desert that looked like it involved peaches.

[threedoctorates]

Spencer nodded in agreement, "They do. Well, we can try them, if I don't like it, you can have mine." And then he gives her a point look, "What else do you want on here?" Gestures to her own plate, which still has the quiche.

"Um. That and that look good." She pointed to a few other things and then took two of the little peach tarts, one for each of them. "Anything else, Spencer?"

Spencer takes a moment, looking over the rest of the selection, then shakes his head. "No, I think that's good." He doesn't want to overflow his plate in case someone else wants something. The last thing he wants is to take things from those who need and/or want it.

"Was there anything else you wanted?"

She shakes her head. She's hungry, but even so she never really eats too much. What's on her plate already is plenty and she doesn't want to be greedy. It isn't polite and this food has to go around for all the children here.

"Should be go sit back down?"

[threedoctorates]

Spencer nods after a moment, taking one last look over the table to make sure he saw everything. He takes a split second to grab enough utensils for the both of them, before giving her a hesitant smile. "Ready?"

She nods and smiles back, still a little shy. Turning, she starts to walk back toward the space they had claimed with their sleeping bags, glancing over her shoulder to be sure he was coming along with her.
