Last night, he realized blearily, had been one of the worst. At least the night before he had actually slept. This time? No chance of that happening.

He wakes from less than five minutes of dozing, startled by a thump from outside and a screech - a girl, frightened by a cat suddenly jumping out of what looks like a pile of trash, he realizes after slamming the window open to see what the hell is going on out there. He rubs his face, sighs, and leans against the windowsill for a few minutes, trying to forget what he had assumed the screaming girl to be.

Your little sister? He grits his teeth, closes his eyes, and wills the dog within to just shut up. Instead it only laughs, and he pushes himself away from the window and starts for the stairs - fully dressed, and still rubbing his eyes groggily. As he reaches the ground floor - the actual Clinic - he almost starts right back up the stairs again, because there's someone there. He can't remember her name (at the moment) and only recognizes her from the times he's caught sight of her ( ... )

Sakura would have started if she wasn't a ninja.

One learns not to reveal that they've been snuck up upon, or that they realize that they have; it gives one a fraction of an advantage of surprise, perhaps a fraction of a second head start on an opponent, and that could be all the difference. Nevertheless, Sakura was startled to realize someone was up and about. At this hour, and especially with this disease--which caused pretty severe fatigue--she hadn't expected anyone to be up.

"Who's there?" she called.

He pressed himself against the wall for a moment before realizing (belatedly) that it really wouldn't help in the long run. Moving slowly away from the shadows cast by the early morning sun in the stairwell, Heine stared directly back at her.

"Me," he replied after a moment. Heine paused again, and finally added, "Heine." Just in case.

The longer he hid himself, the more tense she became, years of instinct feeding into the muscle-and-bone knowledge that a thing that conceals itself is a thing that could spring up and attack you at any given moment.

She kept kunai on her at all times, even here, for a reason.

But when she heard his name, she was able to relax fractionally. Sakura didn't know him well enough to let her guard all the way down, but he'd been living over the clinic for some time and hadn't been too much of a troublemaker, so it was enough to stand down.

"Don't sneak up on me like that," she snapped, several sleepless night's worth of frustration cracking through her voice.
