They are something like a crossbow, only made entirely of metal and instead of shooting an arrow they shoot a small metal projectile. They're also much more powerful than a bow and arrows.

Well, they don't require the physical strength that a bow and arrow would to fire, and they have a better range. You use bullets instead of arrows, they're pieces of lead. [or he assumes they would be in Anatole, at least] I wish I had mine here, I could explain the concept better.
