[Kaien's up on a rooftop again today, and he looks thoughtful as he looks out over the misty Anatolian skyline to the buildings below.]I wonder...just what is it that makes the Door fixate on a particular world, at a given time. I've been here nearly two years now, and I've seen all sorts of different combinations. I was the first to arrive from ( Read more... )

[Dead guy is awful thinky.]

Not so sure havin' friends here would be all that good for them. Nice for us, yeah, but...it's selfish. This place ain't natural and we're not s'posed to be here anyway. You'd really wish to bring that pain to others that we love?

What if they're dead? Or if something terrible was about to happen to them on their world...would you do it then? Or if it was the only way for them to see someone they'd lost?

[Hrngh.]

I dunno. It jus' seems like you'd be delayin' the inevitable. And as a Shinigami, if someone was gonna die, we just...we gotta accept that. Not everyone's as long-lived as Yamamoto-soutaichou.

As much as I'd like to have my team here... no. They have lives and family outside of what we do and I would be selfish to take them away from that.

Ah, that makes sense, I guess.

[Yeah, he knows that feeling. It's just...there's no way of him ever seeing them again, or they him. So he'll take selfish, he thinks. Even if it makes him feel guilty at times.]

There must be a pattern to it. I'm sure there must, but it's probably impossible for us to figure out what it is, given that the variables would come from countless different worlds and realities. We would never be able to observe enough of them to draw any proper conclusion.

[And she frowns, considering the more personal aspect of his meanderings.]

I would want my fiance if I could chose just one person to be here with me. And as to whether or not I would actually do it if I could... I'm not sure. There are a lot of wonderful and amazing things here that I would love to share with him. But there are a lot of terrible things here, too.

[She smiles, self-deprecatingly. She knows he can't but it doesn't stop her wishing.]

What I really wish is that he would just come to get me already.

I would bring my best friend here. [Ax looks slightly embarrassed by this admission, even though he is reasonably certain Anatole is protected from time paradoxes, and that Tobias is more than capable of handling the dangers here. They are not greater than the ones in their home, and he would give Tobias the chance to know his father, if he could.

Part of the embarrassment might be that 'best friend' sounds inadequate to him when compared to shorm.]

The own, only other person here from my world is my brother. This makes me believe, bee-leeve, that there is a pattern to who is brought here, even if we cannot see it. In your two human years here, have you ever found that there are no ree-lay-shun, relationships at all between people from the same world?

It's bad enough that I'm here and unable to help my friends with their mission; I wouldn't dare drag them here as well. [ No matter how much she misses them. ]

I understand. It can be hard, finding a new purpose here.

I've always been good at finding purpose, it's leaving my responsibilities at home unattended that bothers me. Even if time supposedly freezes while we're here.
