When we're here...do we go on where we come from? We're not replaced with a very convincing double?

And if we're in both places at once...do we ever gain memories of what is the future for us? Do we ever get a chance to change it?

I'm hardly a philosopher. I don't know if anyone could even know these things...but theories would be welcomed.

I was with Ukitake in my world on the day that I was brought here. When we met again here, he told me he had no recall of that. His last memories of Seireitei are from several months earlier.

But I am certain that the Ukitake here and there are the same person.

[Kyouraku's tone is conversational and when he reaches the end of the explanation, he shrugs. He doesn't look particularly concerned, though his expression remains thoughtful. He's no wiser than Tseng on the subject, and would never claim to be.]

I can't explain it any more than you can, my friend.

Then he isn't an android...wasn't an android or a double where you come from. Then the actual body and mind are transmitted...just from different points.

Do you remember any events differently? [It describes his situation. It's good to know other people are in the same boat, as mean spirited as that is.]

[Well, Kyouraku only has a vague idea of what an android is, and that's based on pop culture references from the Living World rather than any deep understanding of the subject. But doubles he understands - those kinds of illusions are not uncommon in Soul Society, as he knows to his own cost.

He shakes his head, and makes no attempt to avoid Tseng's eyes.]

He's Ukitake. No one could impersonate him that well.

[Not if they hoped to fool Shunsui. Not even Aizen. But he doesn't say that, just chuckles a little at Tseng's question.]

Yare yare, we have a lot of years to cover. But no, nothing yet.

I'm uncertain if this makes me feel worse or better, but it is good information to have. Thank you.

[why is he sharing this voluntarily? Without even bantering?

…'cause he really friggin' wants to know, that's why. Someone might have something relevant.

Probably not. But still.]

I don't think it's a double.

But I think we go on in both.

Seems to be so for a friend of mine, anyway.

She came here before me. …I mean to say, we're from the same world, same timeline, and in that, she remembers coming here three years before I did.

Meanwhile, I remember her still in our world for two of those three years.

When I first got here, I figured this one must not be really her. Someone or something playing silly buggers, imitating her.

But it's really her. Know it in my blood.

The one back home was really her, too.

So if there are parallel universes with parallel us…es… then they're not "doubles", they're… sod, I don't know anything about… physics or whatever dimensions are. They're reflections of us. Protrusions. Of our multidimensional aspects. [And that's a term he can only dredge up thanks to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.]I ( ... )

That's exactly what I was afraid of. That there is no real us. There are...many versions of us and we are all equally as valid.

I don't suppose any copies of the same person have shown up?

No clue. Wouldn't be surprised.

I dunno… maybe it just means the "real us" extends further than we can think.
