Some kind soul on Facebook has been posting stuff from Doctor Who's Utah shoot. Not terribly spoilery, but I did notice one thing. ( Doctor Who in Utah Spoilers )
Some British fan was moaning and groaning about how the BBC is wasting money filming things in Utah that they could do on a greenscreen.
This British fan is pleased to have some real location work (actually the light in the Alps is very different too, I doubt that's really greenscreenable, but that doesn't affect your point *g*)
But then, I'd rather have a redressed Welsh quarry than endless CGI. Somehow it never looks right (well, not on the BBC's budget).

Makes me wonder exactly how altitude, air quality, latitude, etc affect the light! It's so different from place to place.

I think there's a good balance to be found. Nothing replaces real landscapes, but I think CGI skyscapes or distance stuff (mountains in the distance, etc) can add a lot.
