I have been on a long and arduous quest to find a suitable dress to wear to weddings this year. A lot of the current styles (and fabric patterns, yikes!) are atrocious, but I have found a few things that look okay.  None of them good enough to really go with yet...  But today I was trying on dresses, and guess what?  The ones that fit were size 12s ( Read more... )

Yesterday I was thinking about it, and I said to myself, "I'm glad I live now, after the canon's closed. I'm glad I can know all the things that were mysteries for so long. I'm glad I'm at the part of the story where you can look back and stuff makes sense."

Proverbs 4:18.

I'd vote for the NASB; it's a good, literal-but-readable translation, especially of the poetic books.

I found the NKJV interesting, but a bit awkward in places. Mostly since they update the language (change verb forms, eliminate second person pronouns, etc) but leave the grammar intact.

I am personally very fond of Challoner's revised Douay-Rheims Bible. Also, then, in the apocrypha, you get the story of Judith and Judith was awesome.

Judith! Judith is brilliant!

There's a very good Old-English poem about her, too.

Actually, I've started using the New Jerusalem Bible, which is a Catholic translation, so the apocrypha are in different places, but that's not a big deal. It reads very well.

Interesting post - I'm afraid that aspect of things only struck me on reading Sayers' "Man Born To Be King", because I tend to read the Old Testament in the context of the Gospel and Epistle readings for the day, which puts them so firmly in the Christological context that one tends to forget that that method of reading them is a new thing.
