Y'know, sitting in my room on my bed with a fuzzy blanket, a cup of tea, The Hobbit, and a good CD is a splendid way to get my creativity going.  And is also very calming.  Though I can't seem to finish the tea before it goes cold.

But I was thinking about the mundane and the fantastic.  ( And how they live side-by-side. )

art, deep thoughts, deep things, tolkien, food, geekiness, doctor who, stories, philosophy, fantasy

I so love this.

It's an easy thing to divide things up in our minds the mundane and the fantastic, to say that one is here now, in our hands and under our feet, while the other is "out there" in a nebulous elsewhere. But the light of far stars is falling upon the skin of our world all the time, and wrapped up in the breath and bone of ordinary life, the fantastic makes its home. Tolkien was right when he wrote how myths and legends give depth to our lives. The most fantastic story ever told is the one that's true.

Word to all of this. LOTR really does start with the familiar, and the hobbits are the everyman for the purposes of the tale. I don't think the story could be told, otherwise.

Some time ago it occurred to me that somewhere out there, there's furniture that Jesus made.

That is a mind-bending thought, and made me grin. I love the juxtaposition of the fantastic and the mundane. Part of why I enjoy Harry Potter and Supernatural is the fact that the characters have to deal with both fantastical and real-life concerns (save the day and get homework in on time, that kind of thing).
