Nothing really to add, but I wanted to let you know that I finally came back and read this. The Problem of Susan is one of those subjects I never get tired of reading about. And yes, I heartily agree with what you have to say here.

I like how Pullman dismisses LOTR as a trivial work. *chuckles* Maybe someone should drop the single-volume hardcover on him from a height. Maybe it would seem less trivial then. *grin*

Marvelous post!

C.S. Lewis spoke about the difference between being childish and childlike many times. Thank you for making it obvious that he never stopped speaking about it in his stories! I love his consistency.
