We know that by the time of TOS they've developed Federation Standard as the common language, but during the ENT era would they have that yet? I mean, there's not really much of a Federation at this point to have a Federation Standard

In ENT's time period we're lead to believe that the world is mostly unified so I'd guess there would be an International English standard but with the various mannerisms and general speech patterns (from what I recall) I'd expect that each nation where English was the primary language in the first place- Britain, America etc would have it's own standard anyways

*nods* Re: English being the standard I was thinking it probably would be, taking its predominance as a language, especially taking that forward by about 100 years, but I wasn't sure if that was just my biases as a natural English speaker coming through. :)

I couldn't be sure about Hoshi, seeing as she sounds American, so I could see her both ways with what I remember seeing on screen. Which admittedly was a while ago so I've probably forgotten a lot. >.>

Maybe a proto-Federation Standard, if that makes any sense? There are quite a few aliens already, even if there's not much of a Federation at that point, so I could see them at least working on creating Standard, if another alliance pre=dating the Federation hasn't already created one.

tl;dr there could very well be some for of Standard already, but I could see the proto-Starfleet using English as their standard language?

*grins* I watched the first three seasons but that was years ago so much of what I knew I've forgotten. :/

But yes, with them meeting new aliens all the time, like the Vulcans, the Denobulans etc I can see them beginning to work towards something like the Federation Standard of TOS onwards, but needing something to use in everyday life until then, which, given the make-up of the main crew would seem to be English.

Darn, I need a 'thoughtful' icon. :( I can't believe I don't have one. :/

If I remember correctly Hoshi there was some form of translator that Hoshi used in Enterprise and Hoshi perfected the universal translator some point post ENT. If thats true it was probably built into the every subsequent Starfleet ship by the time of TOS given that 90% of alien species seemed to speak perfect English. But I'm also thinking that with the aliens in Starfleet it would seem likely that the majority of alien Starfleet recruits would learn English at some point because I can't say I remember there being any off world Starfleet academies. I am also leaning towards the idea that other races have their own version of the universal translator Kligons, Andorians, Romulans etc because they have their own fleets of ships and they can always be understood.

tl;dr Yes I would think there would be some sort of Starfleet specific standard but I'm not so sure about a Federation standard as once universal translators became common place there would be no need for one.

*grins* I saw the first three. It's only because my hours at work changed that I didn't see the fourth. I finally picked up the dvd boxset but haven't got round to watching it yet. :)

That's a good point, about universal translators being common. I could have picked up the term Federation Standard from the books and just assumed it applied everywhere. Although... I think there was a TNG episode where Deanna was using Betazed (the language, not the planet) to make a point to Picard and he had no idea what she was saying, he was having to guess based on context. If there was a universal translator that wouldn't necessarily work. *ponders* I'll have to kick the idea around my head a bit more until I can get it making sense to me, I think. :)

So I totally don't know about the Federation Standard, but I got the feeling from the First Contact movie that language might already be pretty standardized on the planet at that point (first contact with the Vulcans, that is).

As for Hoshi, she is Japanese (born in Kyoto) :)

*nods* That would make sense: that there's a standard language for the planet by that point but I would assume that other languages are still alive and kicking around the world as well. ^.^

Ah, in Kyoto? It's been pointed out to me that the wiki says she was from Japan but no city was given. ^.^ I should just remember to check the wikis myself. *facepalms*
