I had avoided spoilers and was stunned to find the new companion in this first episode of the season. My daughter speculates that when the doctor finds Oswin (be it during the Christmas special or earlier) it's before this episode from her perspective. Perhaps some of that 'genius' is stuff she picks up from the doctor

I think you're right, it probably did lose a little atmosphere and horror just from the rapid pacing, but on the other hand it was a pretty good example of how to do a one-parter and not have it feel rushed or essentially plot-free, as has been the case more than once in the past
